Vile Assembly – Gone

Vile Assembly is Mark Wainwright, Mark Webb and Paul Mason, a tight-knit trio of songwriters, musicians, and producers. Spiralling from the success of their debut single earlier this year, the Liverpool based Punk trio spark anarchy and debate with the release of their follow-up single and the debut album out this Autumn.

The trio garnered global media acclaim as far reaching as Japan with the release of their debut single ‘Suicide Feast’ earlier this year. Now they’re back with a bold serving of anarchic Punk with the release of their follow-up single, ‘Gone’, on 6th October, taken from their debut album ‘Fattened By The Horrors Of War’ which is out on October 20th.

The band were created solely to be the whistleblowers on unjust society; their purpose to say what needs to be said through the universally understood medium of music. With their bold, beat-driven, brazen melodic style, they defy you not to take notice.

Fusing the classic 70s Punk vibe of The Clash and the Sex Pistols with a more considered Bowie-esque lyrical content, ‘Gone’ points the judgemental finger at the mighty conglomerates. This single puts the spotlight on the harshness of our system, blatantly exposing the fact that if organisations want you to disappear (whether it’s from work or expelled from the country), then they will act that, without any remorse or hesitation. Do not mess with the powers that be is the message here. Smartly creating a catchy melodic hook and an addictive ‘gone, gone, gone’ chant, all woven around stoic Punk lyrics, ‘Gone’ was created so that it could be easily digested by the masses.

Vile Assembly wants us all to wake up and realise that, whilst we’re a medicated nation, the corporates will always have the ultimate power and control. If anyone speaks out against the corporates they won’t wait, they won’t hesitate, when they want you gone, you’re gone. Free from fear, the trio is using their musical muscle to speak out and they won’t stop screaming until they’re heard.

Listen, absorb and make a change!

Call Me King – Sycamore Lane

Established in the spring of 2015, Call Me King quickly got to work creating an energetic and emotive sound that is powerfully reflected both in recordings and live performances. Call Me King recorded their debut full-length “…and the snow will turn to ash” in January of 2016, just a few months after their live debut. ATSWTTA was recorded at Glass Arrow Audio in Toledo, Ohio by Before Their Eyes’ Jordan DiSorbo, and was produced by Craig Owens of Chiodos.

Call Me King spent the spring and summer of 2016 relentlessly playing shows in Austin and San Antonio, establishing themselves as one of the go-to local acts for several production companies in both cities. Call Me King has performed with multiple national touring acts including Mushroomhead, Blessthefall, Alesana, Oh Sleeper, Famous Last Words, Convictions, Dayseeker, Hotel Books, and more.

On October 7th, 2016, Call Me King released “…And The Snow Will Turn To Ash” in both digital and physical form. Simultaneously, the band kicked off the Eighth Day Tour with up and coming  Dallas act Newhaven. Their first tour took them from San Antonio up through the Midwest to Detroit and back. The tour garnered Call Me King a small profit and was quite successful in exposing the band to several new markets and fans. Call Me King saw an increase in social media followers during and after the tour, effectively bringing their following across all platforms to just over 11,000 fans. In addition, Call Me King has gained approximately 70,000 views on YouTube for the first single and accompanying music video “A Short Drop, a Sudden Stop.” All of these factors combine to leave Call Me King ready and poised to take on a national market, with regional and national tours, distribution, and more.

Call Me King’s next endeavors include re-entering the studio to record their second full length, and a regional tour with Emery in the Fall.”

Tulipomania – On The Outside

Philadelphia-based Tulipomania has revealed the second track from their new three-track maxi-single. ‘On The Outside’ follows the first single – the Seahawks Remix of ‘Don’t Be So Sure’.

‘On the Outside’ is a dark and sinister, yet addictive, affair, contrasting internal battles between hazy dream-pop and angular indie, between fractious and shattered vocals and muscular beats, swirling psychedelia and sonorous, drifting keyboard washes. God is in the TV Zine amidst this is “like a more muscular Tindersticks fronted by Mark Lanegan”. The new video presents intricate torn paper and tape collages of live performance, melded frame-by-frame with interior and exterior images, and additional objects in the band’s examination of shifting mental states of focus.

Tulipomania creates meticulous, mesmerizing videos that augment the group’s artistry, involving painstaking frame-by-frame stop-motion animation techniques. Described as “artistic and inventive”, the music videos created by Tulipomania have been featured in film festivals worldwide, the most recent of which include the London Short Film Festival (England), Leeds International Film Festival (England), Aesthetica Short Film Festival (York, England), Encounters (Bristol, England), Zubroffka (Poland), and StopTrik (Croatia, Poland).

‘Don’t Be So Sure’ was the band’s first hand-painted animation, featuring multiple passes of brushwork shot on thousands of individual sheets of black paper, visually allowing singing self-portraits to morph and dissolve in an atmospheric exploration of ambiguity. For the Seahawks Remix, the band re-photographed the original artwork, frame by frame, matching the new tempo and softer mood, which they felt also called for a more painterly, layered approach to the imagery.

Gelover and Murray first met in art school and found themselves collaborating on projects for their Experimental Film and Animation classes. Tulipomania essentially grew along with these experiences. They were influenced by Talk Talk, the solo work by Mark Hollis and Tim Friese-Greene, and many early 4AD bands, including Cocteau Twins, Lush, Throwing Muses, and The Pixies.

The original version of ‘Don’t Be So Sure’ featured on the band’s fourth album ‘This Gilded Age’ (2016), described by Byron Coley of WIRE Magazine (May 2017 edition) as “…pretty whacked – something akin to a battle of the bands between Crazy Horse and The Kronos Quartet”. The remix featured on this new single comes from Seahawks, a duo made up of Jon Tye, founder of the legendary Lo Recordings (whose roster includes Grimes, Aphex Twin, Four Tet, Thurston Moore and Astronauts) and Pete Fowler, creator of Monsterism vinyl toys and perhaps most famed as illustrator of oh so many Super Furry Animals album sleeves.

Tulipomania, whose name was inspired by the 1637 Dutch tulip market collapse, has been categorized as ‘cult synth punks’, ‘glam-leaning’, ‘postpunk’, ‘art rock’, and ‘muscular chamber pop’. Band members Tom Murray (lead vocals, bass, drums, guitar-organ) and Cheryl Gelover (synthesizer, background vocals) were joined by Mitch Smith (guitar, glockenspiel), who also contributed to the band’s eponymous first album, Richard Hartline (piano, percussion, engineering and mastering), and Howard Thompson (executive producer).

This release features intriguing new artwork by legendary artist Vaughan Oliver, whose work they have long admired. Oliver give distinct visual identities for 4AD releases by many bands, including Mojave 3, Lush, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, The Breeders, This Mortal Coil, Pale Saints, Pixies, and Throwing Muses, in addition to numerous non-4AD artists such as David Sylvian.

Lex Audrey – Godgiven

Please meet Vienna based three-piece Lex Audrey

Featuring Niklas Apfel (vocals, guitar, samples), Patrick Pillichshammer (drums, sampling pad) and Lukas Staudinger (bass, synthesizer), with a nod to Audrey Hepburn the band asks their audience to take a closer look at the world. This look should also meet their debut EP ‘God Given’.

On ‘God Given’ they confront their audience with contrasts, they combine euphoria and sadness and manage to shift the musical boundaries between Rock, Pop, and Electronica.

The band sees the world in red, yellow and blue but when these three primary colors are mixed they turn to black.

Welcome to the world of Lex Audrey.

The Moods – P.O.P. (Profit Over People)

Following a non-stop 2016 that included sell-out gigs in Glasgow and Manchester, great reviews, an artist development deal, their own short film for Joy released, and now included in a movie soundtrack, the rest of 2017 is looking very good for The Moods.

Early autumn, 2017 also sees the launch of film Strangeways Here We Come, starring Michelle Keegan, No Offence’s star, Elaine Cassidy, Bafta winner, Lauren Socha and former Eastender, Nina Wadia. Makers of the Salford-set, darkly-comic feature film chose not one but two of The Moods’ songs, for the soundtrack. The Aptly titled “Kids Carry Guns” is featured in the opening scenes, and new song “Keep Your Powder Dry” graces the final stages of the film. Placement of The Moods tracks was a recommendation of Terry Christian, and testament to the fact that their sound captures the atmosphere of northern urban life. This is a major UK Film release and will be shown in cinemas across 28 UK cities.

The Moods’ message is loud and clear. This 9-strong band unifies rap, brass and beats, delivering potent, political lyrics for a post-2016 world. The Moods will make you dance, and then they’ll make you think.

The New Single JOY, released June 23rd, on A1M record label, has had a massive initial response, from both fans, regional & student radio, online stations and podcasts. Joy is currently being played on over 25 regional radio stations and as far away as USA and Australia. “Joy” – Mixing soaring vocals, rousing strings and drum and bass, Joy will have fans dancing in fields, on dance floors, in living rooms… wherever they happen to be when they’re lucky enough to hear the track”.

To promote the new single and video, The Moods take their bold, live show on the road for a UK tour, starting on June 16th. After a summer travelling around the country, the band returns to Manchester in September to launch their album, Missing Piece at Manchester’s Iconic O2 Ritz.

Courtney Farren – Nothing Like It

Singer/ songwriter Courtney Farren has announced her debut album ‘Nothing Like It’, which is being preceded by the title track of the same name. This six-track LP features guitar and piano songs recorded earlier in spring of this year.

Born and primarily raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Farren has made New York City her current home base. Having moved 12 times in childhood to various northern California locations created restless settlement patterns, which followed her into adulthood, having lived in four very different cities in 2017 alone – San Francisco, Palm Springs, Las Vegas, and now New York.

“What is a break up anyway? I was broken up, though, surely… Bad joke. I can’t speak for my ex’s feelings, but this album contains mine. I started seeing someone and I let it consume me in a few ways. One of those ways led to a lot of songs. I wrote this album over the past year,” explains Courtney Farren.

“I think this record is a good representation of what is to come in my music. I am constantly working and reworking my sound and style in order to best showcase my songs, and I am looking forward to sharing what is produced from those transformations along the way.”

Now that she lives in The Big Apple, Farren regularly plays shows, makes videos, and is finding her place in the local music scene. Upon moving to New York, she teamed up with Brett Sullivan of American Anymen, a good friend who was able to quickly help organize/book shows and make videos to support her pursuit of a career as an artist.

Courtney’s emotionally driven and heartfelt songwriting and performances lend themselves to her current live setup of guitar and vocals. While she is often very casual in the way she introduces her songs, when she sings, her words are fueled by honesty and a sense of urgency.

“Two tracks – ‘Right Now’ and ‘Hard To Tell’ – were actually both written on the same night about a night I ended up seeing my ex in New York last year before I ended up moving here,” explains Farren. “I wrote the title track ‘Nothing Like It’ after a particularly heart-wrenching week spent with this person. I realized that I was no longer ignorant to the feelings I had so recently only known from books and films. I started getting really interested in piano and keyboard shortly following this, and began writing songs more in the vein of ‘Someone’ and ‘Change Your Mind’, which I wrote a few days apart during a short stint living in Vegas.”

Often found carrying around a journal (or two or three) and always writing, she translates these recollections to her detailed accounts of her life and relationships in her songs. Nearly entirely focused on music and writing, she often manages to find time to watch cartoons and play the occasional video game with her brother.

Courtney Farren releases ‘Nothing Like It’ on October 6 and will be playing many live shows, both at home and in Europe, in support of this album, including a mini-tour with American Anymen and guest appearances by many talented artists along the way.

Jason Herring & The Mystery Plan – Electric Love

Jason Herring & The Mystery Plan released their new album ‘Queensland Ballroom’ on September 8 via Ten Millimeter Omega Recordings. With an infectious chilled atmosphere and dreamy female vocals, ‘Electric Love’ is the first single from this release. The accompanying video was directed by Jon Ecklund and Fiona Jones and produced by Dream Out Loud Media.

Based out of Charlotte, North Carolina, the band is comprised of Jason Herring, Otis Hughes, Jeff Chester, Amy Herring, Paul Jensen and Patty McLaughlin. This 11-track offering follows the band’s ‘Electric Love’ EP, released in June of this year.

Both of these releases involved production by legendary producer John Fryer, one of the most innovative sonic architects of our age. “John Fryer has practically soundtracked your entire life,” says Impose Magazine, with a musical imprint that is massive, having shaped the sound of nearly all early 4AD Records’ releases (Cocteau Twins, Lush, Kristin Hersh, Dead Can Dance), as well as bands from Nine Inch Nails and Love and Rockets to HIM and Depeche Mode. He is also one of just two artists behind This Mortal Coil, along with Ivo Watts-Russell, and the mastermind behind his latest project Black Needle Noise.

Jason Herring met Fryer while visiting Los Angeles, where his studio is currently based. After collaborating on the ‘Electric Love’ EP, they launched into the new ‘Queensland Ballroom’ LP, which sees the band take a turn from their trademark psychedelic folk sound to a more electronic downtempo groove.

After a hiatus of several years, bandmates Jason Herring (The Interstellars, Muchacho, Farfalla) and Paul Jensen (Fetchin’ Bones, the Interstellars) began writing songs again. Soon thereafter, the first album ‘The Future Ain’t What It Used to Be’ was released in 2010, followed by ‘Chateau Beaumont’ in 2012 and ‘Long Shadows’ in 2014.

“Our previous releases are a little melancholy, so Amy and I decided we should make this record a little more fun. A record outside of our norm” says, Jason Herring. “Electric Love was inspired by Amy and I feeling a bit randy in the studio – that’s fun, yeah?”

This whole experience ultimately led Jason Herring to collaborate further with John Fryer on music for a feature film and an HBO documentary. Fryer also appears briefly in the new video for ‘Electric Love’.

Mavis Victory Project – Don’t Go Away

If you thought that having two brothers in the same band was dangerous, wait until you meet Mavis Victory Project. Featuring a near-record breaking four brothers, and aided and abetted by a childhood friend, the band’s unconventional line-up is the perfect match to their equally mold-breaking sound. Oozing seedy electronic loops and with echoing, swooping vocals, their sound is all dangerous street corners; distant sirens and the creeping underworld. Appropriately, their video is just as unhinged, inviting you into their world whilst looking at you suspiciously out of the corner of their eye.

Formed by the Ransom brothers – singer Michael, Phil on rhythm guitar, Ollie on bass, Chris on drums and Robert Rosser on guitar and keyboard – the whole collection is self-taught, taking the indie and garage rock blueprint to heart and learning their craft in any place they could. They honed their sound so it flowed organically – time signatures are out of the window; traditional verse/chorus/verse structures burned and thrown over the neighbor’s hedge. Their new single gets under your skin and slowly starts to peel it off, Michael’s breathy, ethereal vocals lulling you into a false sense of security and then pouncing.

With influences including Arctic Monkeys; Kanye West and ScHoolboy Q, Mavis Victory Project is the musical equivalent of joining a cult – once you’re in, you wonder how you ever managed without. The video to “Baby, Don’t Go Away” is due for release on September 22nd and is just as arresting as their sound; with girls, gangs and clandestine weirder likely to eat away at the inside of your head in a way you won’t be able to resist.
