An Interview with King’s X

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with dUg Pinnick of King’s X. Today is the release of the first King’s X album in 14 years titled ‘Three Sides Of One’.

In this interview, we talk with dUg about the process of getting the band back together and recording the new album while getting reacquainted musically and continuing the ever evolving legacy that is King’s X.

About King’s X

Lifelong friends communicate in a language of their own peppered with shared memories, inside jokes, and dreams fulfilled. King’s X partake in a similar musical conversation informed by over four decades together as a band. The trio—Dug Pinnick [bass, vocals], Jerry Gaskill [drums, vocals], and Ty Tabor [guitar, vocals]—lock into an unspoken groove where each element shapes a signature sound singular to these three individual souls alone. No other band in history has pushed hard rock, alternative, metal, progressive, and soul into a galaxy quite like the one King’s X occupy.

Along the way, they architected a catalog of seminal releases. KERRANG! famously scored their 1988 full-length debut, Out of the Silent Planet, with a rare “5-out-of-5-stars.” On its heels, the landmark Gretchen Goes To Nebraska continues to inspire think pieces with Ultimate Classic Rock going as far to proclaim, “no one else has crafted anything remotely like it.” They notably appeared on the soundtrack to Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, and Guitar World christened the self-titled King’s X one of “The 30 Greatest Rock Guitar Albums of 1992” (a year notably highlighted by Pantera’s Vulgar Display of Power, Alice In Chains’ Dirt, Megadeth’s Countdown To Extinction, Dream Theater’s Images and Words, and many more). Following Dogman, the group graced the stage of Woodstock 1994 and toured with everyone from Pearl Jam and AC/DC to Mötley Crüe and Iron Maiden. They also attracted one of the most diehard fanbases in music with Ear Candy [1996], Tape Head [1998], Please Come Home… Mr. Bulbous [2000], Manic Moonlight [2001], Black Like Sunday [2003], Ogre Tones [2005], and XV [2008].

In 2019, author Greg Prato’s book King’s X: The Oral History featured testimonials from the likes of Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam, Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins, Andy Summers of The Police, Scott Ian of Anthrax, Dean DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots, Rex Brown of Pantera, and more. Meanwhile, Rolling Stone crowned them “Internationally renowned cult heroes,” Devin Townsend included Gretchen Goes To Nebraska on “The 5 Albums That Made Me,” and VH1 touted them among “The 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.”

About ‘Three Sides Of One’

Their first full-length studio offering in 14 years, Three Sides of One [Inside Out Music], represents the culmination of this trip and of a bond forged way back in 1979.

“When I think of it, King’s X feels like a couple of old best friends coming together, shooting the shit, and having a good time,” affirms Dug. “It’s instinctual. When I would listen to demo tapes of Jerry and Ty for the record, it gave me a great perspective on how blessed I am to be in King’s X. What they did on Three Sides of One sounded so good. For as familiar as it is, it’s like I’m in a new band.”

“This time, we sat around, listened to each other’s ideas, and would collectively say, ‘Let’s work on that’,” recalls Ty. “It was the most enjoyable album I’ve personally ever recorded in my entire life, period.”

“I’ll cherish what we did in my heart forever,” agrees Jerry. “Everything lined up perfectly.”

During 2019, the members congregated at Black Sound Studio in Pasadena, CA with producer Michael Parnin to bring Three Sides of One to life. Despite consistent touring, they hadn’t cut a new LP since 2008. Nevertheless, the guys picked up where they left off. Creative confidant and collaborator Wally Farkas rolled through, and they channeled their incredible chemistry on tape. During the sessions, Ty and Jerry sang more and expanded the vocal interplay. At the same time, they hung out in the house and enjoyed the summer—even listening to a nearby Rolling Stones concert from The Rose Bowl outside one evening.

“We wanted it to be very special,” Jerry goes on. “We all brought in songs we believed in. We were excited to see each other. We had a wonderful house to stay in, and it was the best situation.”

“We didn’t want to make a record until we knew our fans would love it,” Dug goes on. “It took us a while, but we got there. Once we did, we got on the same page and said, ‘Let’s make this thing the best we can’.”

The opener and first single “Let It Rain” kickstarts this chapter. Clean guitar echoes over a steady beat before a deluge of distortion submerses the chorus’s plea, “So let it rain.”

“I wanted to write a heavy song about the world as I see it,” Dug states. “It was like a prayer to the unknown god to do something. It seems like everything is a mess, and we’ve got no solutions. I was trying to agree with everyone and join the program.”

A bluesy lick swings like a wrecking ball into a swaggering groove on “Give It Up,” which culminates on a manic gang chant. “After I turned 71, death was on my mind every day,” Dug confesses. “Chris Cornell killed himself, and I was thinking of that. Lyrically, it’s about not giving up until you naturally die. I want to ride it out until it’s over. I’m laughing about how I haven’t gotten a will yet, but I should have one. Musically, I wanted it to be really simple, so you can dance to it.”

Then, there’s “All God’s Children.” A dreamy clean guitar melody sets the tone before a trudging groove kicks in. It builds towards a towering chant.

“It’s probably going to be one of the most misunderstood songs of the bunch,” muses Ty. “I was looking around at all of these people who call themselves Christians, but they believe a whole lot of non-Christian things. They choose to believe anyway despite everything collapsing with all of the death and ugliness around their beliefs.”

On “Flood,” a pummeling polyrhythmic riff bludgeons and bruises as Dug croons an apocalyptic affirmation, “I used to say that all we need is love, now I’m thinking that what we need is a flood.”

“Back in the day, we used to do songs where the rhythms changed like ‘We Were Born To Be Loved’ or ‘Far, Far Away’, so we wanted to do a couple of songs that lent toward that,” Dug elaborates. “I looked around and said, ‘Man, we need a reset’. It’s only my opinion. Maybe it’s not a very positive record,” he laughs.

“She Called Me Home” slips into a delicate darkness uplifted to the light by the siren’s call of a soaring guitar solo. “I was thinking of when I was kind of dead and had to recover,” admits Jerry. “I didn’t think I was ever going to play again, but a friend said, ‘You are going to play. You will get out there’. It came from those conversations.”

The closer “Every Everywhere” hinges on a powerful last word, “The world is crying for love, every everywhere.”

“I tried to write a Beatles-type song everyone could sing along with,” Dug adds. “It says what it is.”

In the end, Three Sides of One is everything King’s X were, are, and always will be.

“To me, the train is rolling, and I’m on it like we’ve been doing for 43 years,” Dug leaves off. “We’re just old friends.”

Beauty in Chaos Ft. Wayne Hussey – The Delicate Balance of All Things

The Mission frontman Wayne Hussey and LA-based Beauty in Chaos present ‘The Delicate Balance of All Things’. This is the first taste of Beauty in Chaos’ forthcoming full-length album ‘The Storm Before The Calm’. The accompanying video was filmed and directed by Vicente Cordero, edited by Leslie Gladney, and produced by Industrialism Films.

Slated for release in early 2020 via Los Angeles label 33.3 Music Collective, this album was recorded at Ciravolo’s own SAINTinLA Studio and produced by Grammy nominee Michael Rozon, best known for his work with Ministry.

Beauty in Chaos is the brainchild of guitarist Michael Ciravolo. Originally from New Orleans and now based in Los Angeles, he is perhaps best known as President of Schecter Guitar Research. Before launching Beauty in Chaos, Ciravolo had played guitar in Human Drama for the past 30 years, as well as playing live and recording with Michael Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel since 1998.

Wayne Hussey and Beauty in Chaos (Michael Ciravolo) have been enjoying a fruitful collaboration since the inception of BIC’s acclaimed debut album ‘Finding Beauty in Chaos’. This followed by the subsequent ‘Beauty Re-Envisioned’ album, which, in addition to various remixes of tracks involving Hussey, also featured the original track ‘The Long Goodbye (Au Revoir)’, as well as ’20th Century Boy’ ft. Rolan Bolan and Wayne Hussey.

“I was adamant about releasing something new… I wanted the new record to be a bit darker and brooding. I sat down with a drum machine and blasted out several ideas that seemed to convey the overall ‘tone’ I wanted for the record. I knew Wayne was busy preparing for his solo European tour, but he said to send the tracks over and he would see if anything struck him,” says Michael Ciravolo.

“In typical Hussey fashion … he said he was ’empty on words’, understandable since he did just finish his ‘Salad Daze’ book. To my surprise, he sent back all of the vocal tracks a few days later, saying he had the title of ‘the delicate balance of all things’ that he thought about using for a future Mission record… and the lyrics basically poured out. Sonically and lyrically, I think this song perfectly sets the ‘feel’ I want ‘The Storm Before The Calm’ to have.”

An Exclusive Interview with dUg Pinnick (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Rare is it when I get to talk with someone of such knowledge and depth. Rarer still is when that learned musical scholar is also one cool and down-to-earth guy. That guy is dUg Pinnick. dUg is a virtual one-man walking history of music. Having honed his style and tone in the ’70s and solidified his place in music in the ’80s with King’s X, dUg played it all, done it all, heard it all, and been it all. And now we get the honor of hearing some of those stories and much more from the badass of bass in this exclusive interview.

Beauty In Chaos Ft. Al Jourgensen – 20th Century Boy

While Ministry is mid-way through their current North American tour, frontman Al Jourgensen, together with LA-based Beauty in Chaos, have unveiled their new video for ’20th Century Boy’. This is one of 14 brilliant tracks found on the debut album ‘Finding Beauty in Chaos’.

This album, which was released via the LA-based label 33.3 Music Collective on vinyl and CD on November 30, features nearly 80 minutes of music, curated by guitarist Michael Ciravolo on deluxe CD and limited-edition heavyweight, colored vinyl.

“The Beauty in Chaos project is a tribute to both community and family and what I think is lacking in the music industry these days. It’s an honor to be a part of this great line up! At 60, I never thought I’d be singing “I’m your Boy, I’m your fucking Toy”, but maybe all the AARP discounts are helping me stay young,” says Al Jourgensen.

“I initially met Al while we were recording his vocals for this song, and our shared interest in Jaguar cars and old country music (and wine) sparked a wonderful friendship. He offered me the opportunity to engineer and mix the last Ministry record ‘Amerikkkant’. Quite an honor for me as I view Al as a true architect of sound. We are on track to record the new Ministry record in February 2019,” says Michael Rozon.

Earlier the band previewed the singles ‘Man of Faith’ feat. Wayne Hussey of The Mission and Simon Gallup of The Cure, as well as ‘Storm’ feat. Ashton Nyte (The Awakening, MGT) and ‘Look Up’ feat. Tish Ciravolo.

The video for ‘20th Century Boy’ was produced by Industrialism Films and directed by Vicente Cordero, who says, “Working again with Beauty In Chaos and Michael is always a pleasant adventure. Out of the 3 videos we have done, each has been a completely different visual approach specifically designed for each song. When we made the video we wanted to go with a raw feel so we decided to film in a seedy bar and have a high energy performance, and Al Jourgensen and BIC did deliver”.

“This was a song I always wanted to cover and finding out Al was also a T. Rex fan turned on the light for me to do this,” explains Michael Ciravolo. “Ironically, my now wife Tish and I’s first real date was seeing MINISTRY at Lollapalooza in ’92. They were simply brutal and what a sonic assault! We both became big fans. Fast-forward 25 years and Al is sitting in my studio singing and blowing harp on this song! Tish and I share the stage with him in this video were pretty special and it shows that you never know where life will take you”.

Los Angeles-based Beauty in Chaos has announced the impending vinyl release of their debut album ‘Finding Beauty in Chaos’. Slated for November 30, 2018, 33.3 Music Collective will be offering almost 80 minutes of music, curated by guitarist Michael Ciravolo on deluxe CD and limited-edition heavyweight, colored vinyl. Ahead of that, they present their new single ‘Look Up’ feat. Tish Ciravolo. The accompanying video was produced by Industrialism Films and directed by Vicente Cordero.

“Once I set up my turntable, I immediately listened to a bunch of vinyl from the late ‘80s 4AD period and shoegaze. Cocteau Twins, Lush, Slowdive and, of course, My Bloody Valentine. Inspired, I picked up my guitar and run it through an excessive amount of delay and reverb. Once I hit on that main riff, I knew it would be a perfect song for my wife to sing. I thought she delivered a melodic and lyric homerun,” says Michael Ciravolo.

Originally from New Orleans and now based in Los Angeles, Michael Ciravolo has played guitar in Human Drama for the past 30 years, most recently on ‘Broken Songs for Broken People’ (2017). Perhaps best known as President of Schecter Guitar Research, he has also played live and recorded with Michael Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel since 1998. In 2015, he was joined by wife Tish Ciravolo, founder of Daisy Rock Guitars.

“When you randomly meet someone and instantly know that you want to create a history with them, that is what I call magic. Everyone’s family history is different but I wanted to change what I had grown up in and create a loving home life including dogs, cats, and kids,” says Tish Ciravolo.

“My fear is now, with the advent of cell phones, that people are so busy looking down at their phones they are missing life.  See the moon outside my window?  See the stars up in the sky?  There is magic in the air – don’t miss that magic, that chance in life to randomly meet someone that you want to create a history with and ‘Look Up’.”

Hopping from band to band and inching ever-closer but never getting to that elusive record deal, Tish Ciravolo became the quintessential L.A. rock queen, having played in numerous bands including Rag Dolls, The Velvets, They Eat Their Own, StunGun and eventually her own band Shiksa and the Sluts.

Combining a lifelong passion for making music with a desire to “level the playing field” for dedicated female guitarists and bassists of all ages, Tish Ciravolo founded Daisy Rock Girl Guitars in 2000. Ciravolo’s dream that “every girl who wants to play guitar is welcomed and inspired to do so. This was my chance—my duty—to change the culture and provide her and all girls with a better, more inviting experience.”

Ciravolo’s focus on female empowerment and females in music has been immortalized by her induction into the Museum of Making Music, the world’s premier museum showcasing the history of the music products industry. In 2009, Tish participated in NAMM’s Oral History project and received Guitar Goddess Magazine’s “Trailblazer Award.” In 2010, Daisy Rock was inducted into The Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, AZ, and Tish received the Searchlight Scholar award from the Women’s Executive Leadership Summit at the University of Wisconsin School of Business. At the 2012 NAMM Show, Tish Ciravolo was honored with the “She Rocks Award.” Ciravolo has spoken at Ted Talks, the Musicians Institute, and NAMM and has been featured in national and international media outlets such as USA Today, People, Time, Newsweek, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, FOX, VH1, the Premier Radio Network, BBC Radio, and the Associated Press.
