The Academy of Sun Release ‘The Parts That Need Replacing’ Video (The Week in #Indie Segment)

The Academy of Sun has just dropped their new video for the track titled ‘The Parts That Need Replacing’. As we said in our original review of the single, ‘…delivers sustenance within that creative void’. The video adds to that in the fact that the visuals are timed and beautifully representative of the music that is the single. Almost an art-house accompaniment, the video adds that visual something that lends more of a creative touch as a separate stand-alone and not so much of a bonus to the song. Music for the senses.

‘The Parts That Need Replacing’ is out now, available across online stores and streaming platforms such as Spotify. The full album ‘The Quiet Earth’ will be released in the summer of 2020 on CD, as well as digitally.

ABOUT THE ACADEMY OF SUN

Formed in Brighton nine years ago, The Academy of Sun is a four-piece comprised of Nick Hudson (piano, synths, Hammond organ, harmonium, vocals, percussion, synths), Kianna Blue (bass, synths), Guy Brice (guitars) and Ash Babb (drums).

Together, they present dystopian fantastic creations that combine the deeply personal and the poetically arcane. Dark yet buoyant, this is a controlled explosion of psychedelic and dark power pop with atmospheres couched in vast and expansive landscapes and cinematic arrangements.

The video for this single was directed and edited by Nick Hudson with cinematography by Samuel Horn. It features Wolfgang Storm with dinner guests Mark Walter, Gillian Rodgers and TAOS frontman Nick Hudson in what seems to be a red-brushed-culinary spread of grisly delight held in a gothic lair.

“The Parts That Need Replacing’ was written to sate my desire to ‘reconsecrate’ 16th Century Hungarian countess and noblewoman Elisabeth Bathory, whose reputed cannibalism and serial murders were most likely reputation-staining fantasies dreamed up by the church out of institutional jealousy. How could a woman possess such vast wealth and estates AND resist conformity with the church’s ways of being. Same tarring-brush as used on Jeanne D’Arc and Gilles de Rais. Usually, Bathory is immortalized in doom and black metal, so I wanted this reconsecration to take place by feeding these myths, scenarios, and allegations of bloodbaths, black magic, and eternal life into the medium of a hyper-catchy, high-energy pop song,” says Nick Hudson.

“The video, just as the song, alludes to various parts of the Elisabeth Bathory mythos – the alleged bathing in blood to replenish her youth, the cannibalism, the occult, and gnostic preoccupations, the aristocratic sensibilities, etc., whilst also ‘queering’ Bathory by having her played by the 23-year-old musician and artist Wolfgang Storm. The local butchers are getting fairly accustomed to my infrequent but memorable extra-curricular requests for off-cuts. As the song states “the best special effects are those you cannot see”… we shot it in one, fevered, orgiastic and insanely fun day. The dinner sequence was as deranged to shoot as it looks to be in the resultant video.”

Following 2017’s ‘Codex Novena’ LP, a hypnotic, doomy opus that found its way onto both Dangerous Minds and Sweeping The Nation end-of-year lists, ‘The Quiet Earth’ offers a colossal meditation on dystopia, irradiated landscapes and extreme states of human emotion. This 15-track collection of post-punk, chamber ballads and darkly prog studio epos was recorded at Church Road Studios with Paul Pascoe, whose work includes the last 2 albums by Barry Adamson (Magazine / Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds).

Nick Hudson’s musical juggernaut has been active in various incarnations since 2012, always transcending expectations. The Academy Of Sun has collaborated with Massive Attack’s Shara Nelson, members of NYC’s Kayo Dot, David Tibet of Current 93, Asva and Matthew Seligman (Bowie, Tori Amos, Morrissey). Hudson has also collaborated with Wayne Hussey of The Mission, as well as Canadian queercore icon GB Jones.

Known for explosive and psychedelic live shows, The Academy Of Sun has performed in a medieval castle in Italy, a boat on the Thames, an abandoned railway carriage in Offenbach, colossal churches, The London College of Fashion, The Old Market theatre in Brighton, the MS Stubnitz in Hamburg, Brighton Dome, and a string of L.A. shows in 2019. Having toured 3 continents, highlights include appearances with Mogwai, Toby Driver and Keith Abrams from Kayo Dot, and Timba Harris (Mr. Bungle, Amanda Palmer).

Ender Bender Premieres ‘Honey Lavender Girl’ Video (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Ender Bender (a.k.a. Eddie Olguin) dropped his new single on April 17th, 2020 titled ‘Honey Lavender Girl’. The track is ‘retrotastic’ in that it has that beautiful summer vibe that brings me back to the summer of ’84 with the bright pastels coming through the speakers and the oversized neon shoelaces giving me goosebumps through the hook. A little mainstream Bowie within the vocals, this nouveau take on new wave noir is a fresh start for the new decade, which may have gotten off to a bad start, but Ender Bender is one of the artists that can bring us back into our musical ‘happy place’, and that is a good thing.

As of April 17, ‘Honey Lavender Girl’ will be available everywhere across online stores and streaming platforms. The full five-track EP will be released on Friday, May 1.

ABOUT ENDER BENDER & ‘HONEY LAVENDER GIRL’

Ender Bender, a newcomer in the indie-pop world, presents his new feel-good single ‘Honey Lavender Girl’, hot on the trail of his debut track ‘Star Killer’. These positive vibing tracks present an enticing taste of the forthcoming ‘EQ’ EP, to be released in late spring.

The new single centers around his life-changing move from LA to Rome, a journey from self-destructive hedonism to a spiritual and artistic renaissance. ‘Star Killer’, on the other hand, explores the ups and downs, the angels and the demons of life in Los Angeles. The accompanying video was designed and directed by Italian artist Tommaso Ragnisco.

Ender Bender is the solo project of Eddie Olguin, a multi-instrumentalist producer now based in Rome, guided by a unique mission of making perfect modern pop-rock. Creating music and spreading bliss in the face of the realization that nothing in life is perfect, the pursuit of this perfect sound is what fuels the Ender Bender fire.

“The idea for this song came about when I decided to walk away from everything I knew, pack my bags, and follow my heart.  The song encompasses basic feelings that can be associated with such a decision: anxiety, excitement, hope, love, but most importantly, choosing to allow yourself to be happy.  The ride was exciting, tumultuous, and often scary; but the destination is joy. “There’s a time and a place for everything, and our time is right now,” says Eddie Olguin.

About ‘Star Killer’, Olguin says, “L.A. raised me and made me who I was, both mother and lover, an open highway to my fantasies and, eventually, the butler of my demons.  This song is but a humble, yet bittersweet, an ode to this city”.

An artist and a small business owner in Los Angeles, Olguin had the Ender Bender ‘vision”, one night in a hospital in Glendale, California while literally facing the prospects of his own death. He decided that he had to cut ties with the artistic quagmire that is Los Angeles and all of its demons. Soon after, the Universe, in all her giving glory, opened the doors for Eddie to relocate to Rome, Italy in the name of love, sanity and, in this case, music.

Not looking for a scene, but simply in need of certain energy and feeling, Rome ultimately proved to be the perfect place for Eddie to create this music, bringing the Ender Bender project to fruition.

Inspired by music from multiple genres, including light-hearted indie pop, Ender Bender combines new wave and synthpop elements of decades past with forward-thinking indie pop and electro. Here the past meets the future in an addictive sonic stimulant designed in an audio lab somewhere.

Felixity Premieres ‘You&Me’ Single (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Felixity drops her new single, remix, and video for the track titled ‘You&Me’. Featuring a wonderful vocal syncopation done soulfully by Felixity and continuing that level of skill with her voice throughout, ‘You&Me’ centers on that special hook not heard since the glory days of Motown with modern twits and funked-up rhythm that will cause random rewinds just to hear those moments again.

This all culminates into that wonderfully wicked breakdown meant for the masses that literally segways into the remix via that special playlist where both songs are combined. Oberkon matches the mayhem with a slick beat and otherworldly and otherways overlooked instrumentation brought to the forefront which generates that original feel for the dancefloor.

The Oberkon Remix is a collaborative effort between 3 heavy hitters: Andy Spaceland of Alpha and 5 Billion in Diamonds, together with Butch Vig (of Garbage fame and then some); Jay Reynolds (Dua Lipa, Liam Gallagher, MIST, Fred Again, Gabrielle, Paloma Faith); and producer David Francolini, who also produced Felixity’s forthcoming album.

As of April 17, ‘You&Me (Oberkon Remix)’ will be available across all the main digital platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify. On April 24, the next single ‘Twisted Love’ will be released, followed by the full ‘Love Sick’ album on May 1 via Komplex Recordings.

ABOUT FELIXITY

‘You&Me’ is a hyper-real and joyful gem that shines in an auto-tuned pop landscape. Equally street-smart-urban and classic chanteuse, her remarkable voice and effortless range make an impactful introduction.

Felixity’s cool, hauntingly beautiful tone is fused with a world-class dynamic production; washes of orchestral uplift and wonderful musicianship weaving soulfully funky, R&B vibes. The deep groove, broad sonic palette, and positive message should resonate with all generations of music lovers.

The Oberkon Remix was created by a trio of heavy hitters: Andy Spaceland (a.k.a. Andy Jenks), part of Alpha and 5 Billion in Diamonds, together with Butch Vig; Jay Reynolds, notable mixer for the likes of Dua Lipa, Liam Gallagher, MIST, Fred Again, Gabrielle, Paloma Faith, and Pixie Lott; and producer David Francolini.

“I often write about things that have hurt me, music is the easiest place I can put the things in my head because I find it simpler to sing about things than say them.  I’ve opened up a lot about myself in these songs so I hope someone out there hears them and feels a little bit less alone,” says Felixity.

Recorded in London, Bristol, Brighton, Berlin and Geneva, this LP was mastered by Brian Lucey (Katy Perry, Shania Twain, Liam Gallagher, Hatchie, Green Day) at Magic Garden Mastering and mixed by Cenzo Townsend (U2, Ash, The Stranglers, The Wedding Present) at Decoy Sound. It was produced and engineered at Komplex Studio by David Francolini, who has been operating Komplex Studios out of Bristol but has now moved operations to the French Alps.

Her forthcoming collection of 10 deeply personal songs is part confessional, part exorcism and all infused with her extraordinary voice and street smart lyrics. Inspired by The Weeknd (Trilogy), Etta Bond, J Cole, Anderson Paak, KAYTRANADA, and Jhene Aiko, Felixity’s songs, which were written at the very end of last year, takes the listener on a poetic journey to the heart of the singer.

“Given the confessional nature of Felixity’s lyrics, it was important to create a dramatic soundscape; a cinematic and lush harmonic bed on top of which her wonderful voice could sit and her stories’ meanings are amplified. I have shapeshifted the feel of the songs throughout the record so it feels like the emotional journey that the lyrics portray. All quite conceptual really, but always keeping it uncluttered, funky, simple, and the groove deep,” says producer David Francolini.

This collection of songs of love and loss is just the tip of the iceberg of what is to come. Living between Bristol, London, and Brighton, Felixity has several albums planned for 2020 and is already back in the studio to record the second.

As for many artists, the live shows planned in support of this album have been postponed. Nonetheless, Felixity is hoping to perform again later in the summer, current environment permitting.

Beatific Premieres ‘Sunshine’ EP (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Beatific finally drop their long-awaited EP titled ‘Sunshine’. We originally reviewed their single ‘She Loves Him’ and that was the moment the anticipation began. With the full EP ‘Sunshine’, we get a more complete picture of what Beatific is about and want to accomplish.

Those thick and blended harmonies of the lead single are expounded upon with the rest of the EP present. With added instrumentation such as a serenely played acoustic guitar riff in ‘Perpetual Contemplation of an Infinite Glory’ to the almost retro-esque synth wave of ‘Smile Dangerous’ finalized with an almost purely orchestral rendition of ‘Naftali (My Struggle)’ with a hint of an homage to M83, Beatific solidifies their style and puts forth their intention in the industry as an act that is not only here to stay, but here to play.

An Interview with Fea (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Fea is one of those bands who will get what they work for based on the caliber of their music. I can say this because it is evident all over the exclusive interview above. Formed by friends who developed into a family, Fea is one of those tight bands that are lockstep in sound and unified in ambition.

And, in this interview, we get the entire band! With the perspectives of all four, we get the story behind the band, their new album titled ‘No Novelties’, their upcoming video for ‘Girlband’ and, importantly, the methods and meaning behind the music. Fea shows they are not only a band that will last but will thrive.

Fea’s latest album, ‘No Novelties’, is out now via Blackheart Records.

Beauty in Chaos Ft. Wayne Hussey Releases ‘The Delicate Balance of All Things’ (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Beauty in Chaos has officially dropped the first video, titled ‘The Delicate Balance of All Things’, from their upcoming album ‘The Storm Before the Calm’. The song is a definitive evolution of the project’s previous album and remixes, with a darker tone and a subdued penchant for the musically macabre with hints of retro goth. You can also definitely see how the working relationship with Michael Ciravolo and Michael Rozon has evolved as they are branching out with their individual creativeness and finding that common ground where genius lurks and originality thrives.

To me, the video is the next step for the project as it involves familiar faces taking things into new directions with a video that is darker in tone, to match the track, and a brilliant mix of storyline scenes cut with performance shots beautifully breaking the fourth wall. In a way, this is what Beauty in Chaos is to me; that subtle balance between fantasy and reality, because this is where dreams become the motivation in us all.

‘The Storm Before The Calm’ album will be released on February 21, 2020, via 33.3 Music Collective. As with the two albums released to date, it will be available at the official BIC Store and Bandcamp.

We had the pleasure of asking Michael Ciravolo a few questions about ‘The Delicate Balance of All Things’ as well as what’s in store for all things BIC.

Fo Fera Premieres ‘Honey, Are You Broken’ Video (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Fo Fera has just dropped her new video for the song titled ‘Honey, Are You Broken’ as an exclusive premiere right here on Jammerzine! This is her second single and very first video and we are proud to show it right here. To listen to this track is to know a piece of Fo Fera. A very powerful and sacred piece.

Healing is a tumultuous process. And we’ve all been there. But, for some people, the light at the end of the tunnel comes through creative expression. That can be both a documentation and a process in which the heart can harden as well as heal. And that is what I believe Fo Fera is doing with ‘Honey, Are You Broken’. In fact, this song brought a tear to my eye before I read her biography (below). Fo Fera may not know it but she wears her heart on her sleeve with this track and video. Like a beautiful rainbow at night, you may not be able to see it, but, that beauty is still there. Just because it’s in the dark doesn’t mean its any longer beautiful. ‘Honey, Are You Broken’ is the sunrise that sheds light on that beauty with a wonderful song that can warm the heart and a video that will please the senses.

Honey, Are You Broken was written over five years ago. For so long, this song was too painful to perform live. At the time this was written, I was trapped between four walls with an ex I could not escape, who was losing themself to a battle with substance abuse. I was in love with another, who revealed his true love was to another man. Despite all of my pain, my inability to cry, let alone express sadness was excruciating. The only way to get it out was to write.
– Fo Fera

ABOUT FO FERA

Fo Fera is a multilingual singer-songwriter who uses her unique perspective and deeply personal lyrics to guide her audience through despair, heartbreak, and ultimately, triumph. Inspired by the emptiness and turmoil she hides, Fo Fera pours honesty into her lyrics, comforting and captivating her fans with her sadness.

Songwriting for over a decade, Fo Fera has been a closet musician for most of her youth. Struggling from severe overthinking and a crippling fear of success, it was only recently that she decided to challenge her inner thoughts. Fo Fera is a self-taught guitarist and sings in eight languages.

As a storyteller, Fo Fera writes love ballads, a musical storyteller. She finds inspiration on lone walks in nature, reflecting on heartbreak, emotions, and living in different eras. Her music expresses emotions from different tumultuous relationships. By over-sharing, she connects us to our darkest emotions. She believes music, fashion, and impacting visuals are all parallel.

An Interview with Prima Donna (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Prima Donna is a band that has strong ties around and within the music scene. They are, to me, the underground underdogs. What I mean by that is that they keep their street-creds while raising the flag for the indie scene showing just how awesome it is.

And, in this interview, we get to talk with one-fourth of this awesomeness in the form of David S. Field, drummer for Prima Donna. We cover a lot of ground here too. We get a glimpse of the beginnings of Prima Donna as well as collaborations including there inclusion into legendary musician Steven Van Zandt’s illustrious Wicked Cool Records stable of artists as well as the side project David and Prima Donna frontman Kevin Preston have with Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong called The Longshot.

Prima Donna clearly has a full plate throughout 2020, as you will hear in the interview, including a new video for ‘Sing to Death’ (read our single review HERE) as well as a new album and more.

An Interview with Trentemøller (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Danish indie/electronic music Trentemøller may be one of the most diverse people in the music industry.  With a career spanning over two decades and literally hundreds of credits cross-hopping between albums of many different genres as well as scoring and production work, to say hee is established at this point would be an understatement.

And now we get the next evolution of his revolution in the form of his new album titled ‘Obverse’, which drops today (September 27, 2019). Featuring guest spots by such as Rachel GoswellLina TullgrinLisbet Fritze, and Jennylee, ‘Obverse’ is an electronic dreamscape in which each track has its own signature stamp within the collection yet everything seems to fall into place further cementing Trentemøller’s place as a music legend.

And today we get to speak with that legend and get his incite on the music industry as a whole as well as ‘Obverse’ and the magic contained within.

ABOUT TRENTEMØLLER & ‘OBVERSE’

Trentemøller already shared gorgeous videos for singles “In The Garden” (ft. Lina Tullgren) and “Sleeper,” in addition to a short film he wrote & recorded music for with Lisbet Fritze, featuring Sean Penn and Helena Christensen.  “Try A Little” (ft. jennylee of Warpaint)  came out 8/30.

He has always worked with strong female singers, including Savages’ Jehnny Beth, Low’s Mimi Parker, Blonde Redhead’s Kazu Makino, and Marie Fisker. This new album features the voices of Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, Warpaint’s Jenny Lee Lindberg (jennylee) and Lisbet Fritze, as well. With shoegaze, dream pop, synth-based soundscape enriched by German Kosmische/Motorik experimentalist spirit, Obverse explores complementary contrasts inherent in the album title and Nordic environment he calls home.
