The Week In #Indie

Jammerzine’s The Week in #Indie for 4/5/2021

In this episode, we feature an exclusive interview with Jack McLeod from the Scottish Indie band The Rah’s. Also featured are premieres and previews from Julian Shah-Tayler, JPDL & Yogi Beats featuring Rider Shafique, Kirlian Camera, Kurtis Hoppie, Vix20, Pat Fulgoni, Pinhdar, and Sunlust.

About The Rah’s

Fronted by the charismatic vocalist Jack Mcleod and featuring Jordan McIntrye (lead guitarist), Neale Gray (drummer), Lee Brown (bassist), and Jack Miller (keyboard/ guitarist), The Rah’s are an alternative rock band from East Lothian, Scotland.

Over the course of their career, the bands striking live performance style and electric sound have led to them touring across Britain and Ireland, capturing the curiosity of fans with their early releases.

Having supported the likes of The View, Chris Helm, and The Fratellis and with Radio X presenter Gordon Smart highlighting the band as one to watch on the Scottish Music Podcast ‘Telt’, the band is going from strength to strength, and The Rah’s are beginning to make their mark on the UK music industry.

After spending over a year in the studio,  the year ahead is set to be the best yet, with The Rah’s due to tour up and down the country ahead of the release of their debut album. Not to be missed.

About Julian Shah-Tayler

Julian Shah-Tayler has today premiered his new song titled ‘Melt’. This track, to start off, is a darker and mellower turn in Julian’s personal ‘evolution of revolution’. Featuring a more sensual vocal styling and an ethereal accompaniment, the hook is a bit more subtle yet just as powerful and signature in that singularity sort of way. Almost in the realm of Pink Floyd at times, but not enough to be noticeable to the casual listener. ‘Melt’ is a song that will endear you without trying. Captivate without realizing. Evolve without involving. This is music.

About JPDL & Yogi Beats featuring Rider Shafique

JPDL & Yogi Beats release their new video for the track titled ‘Madness’ featuring Rider Shafique. The track is a smooth blend of syncopated dissonance combined with beat-laden jazz style fusion-funk and a suave and varied percussion.

The meaning behind the music is the madness in the mental. A perfect fit for this era of isolation. What is mental illness but that final desperation in coping with the seemingly un-copable. What we often forget is that the end is never the end but the segway to a new beginning. This is the brilliance within the beats of ‘Madness’.

About Kirlian Camera

Kirlian Camera has released their new video for the track titled ‘The 8th President’. While maintaining their dark presence that has become a signature for Kirlian Camera over many years, they have also brought forth an original, almost dystopian visual and audio aesthetic within the video that demands attention. Think of the movie ‘Blade Runner’ when I say this. It’s almost world-building.

The tack is all that one would expect from Kirlian Camera and, in some ways, more. There is a brooding, slow-burning underbelly to ‘The 8th President’ that, in some ways, reflects the current state of isolation and loneliness brought on by the current state of the world. Reflective of the things that are, Kirlian Camera gives a soundtrack to this that leaves more questions than answers and, while most current creativeness shows us what we could be, this shows us what we are. Brilliant.

About Kurtis Hoppie

Kurtis Hoppie has released his new video for the track titled ‘Vegan Burger’. A unique track featuring Kurtis’ original rap cadence and lyrical phrasing way left of the creativity side, ‘Vegan Burger’ transcends the rap genre into pop with a killer sense for songwriting proving that a hook can be a monster.

The video is a story with heart and a visual with art and fits perfectly to the beat of the track. A video track for the sound.

About Vix20

Vix20 has premiered their new video for the track titled ‘Broken Melody’. Taking a large detour from tracks past, Vix20 shows a lighter side of originality with a retro-hook-filled melody-induced track with tips of the hat to the likes of Christopher Cross, Pink Floyd, and more. Sound like an original mix? You have to listen to find them, but they are all there. This is as much a classic approach to songwriting as it is a time-honored way to lay a track down.

The video gives that lucid memory to the graphic artists of old that worked on such classics as ‘Heavy Metal’ and ‘Animalympics’. Given the music-heavy tinges of those two classic films, it’s easy to see where Vix20 gets some of its influence. And that influence is worn on the sleeve on the jacket of originality.

About Pat Fulgoni

Pat Fulgoni (Kava KavaCabinet of Millionaires) has released his new live album titled ‘Dark Side Of The Blues’. Featuring a stellar lineup of musicians from the Czech area, at gives a sturdy repertoire of standards and favorites from the golden era of the blues with the conviction of a bluesman who sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads and never looked back. Each musician gets a turn in the spotlight as this is a showcase for a new band in the making only waiting for COVID to end to get busy with the blues. Magnificent.

About Pinhdar

Pinhdar has released their new album titled ‘Parallel’. Angelic and operatic vocals soaring over lush and vivid soundscapes would be the immediate way to describe Pinhdar. Cecilia Miradoli and Max Tarenzi, the minds behind the music of Pinhdar, make music that is much deeper than that, though. There is a soul to ‘Parallel’. And a personality. Almost on the level of a concept as much as an album, ‘Parallel’ is, at times, a concept opera with the songs relating to chapters of a bigger, coherent piece. A ‘theater of the soul’, if you will.

The album gives you enough diversity to take what you want and bond with what you will. This is brilliance as an art form.

About Sunlust

Sunlust is set to drop their new album titled ‘Geek Confessions’ on April 12th. The album is a solid set of hooks harking back to when alternative was still alternative, and not he mainstream. Quirky at times and gritty throughout, Sunlust leave the garage door open and lets the neighborhood soak up the goodness ringing out of the garage.

The album is set for release on April 12th alongside a special edition pressing of 180g Vinyl. The band is looking forward to getting back out to play live, moshing with friends, and tearing up the stage!

Charlie Nieland Premieres ‘Divisions’ Album (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Charlie Nieland has released his new album titled ‘Divisions’. Charlie is an artist with a long history in the music business, and ‘Divisions’ reflects that. The songwriting is as solid as it is diverse. And, what I mean by that, is that this is not a ‘filler’ album. This is an album with 13 tracks of differential personality. Something will be relatable to the listener regardless of what kind of listener that is.

There is also enough diversity to show that these tracks could be in any order you want them to be in. That is a good thing in the age of playlists. You can construct this album to your liking. And that is what is at the heart of Charlie Nieland’s mindset as an artist. That accessibility that those talented in music can possess. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder let the music be the soundtrack to the soul.

The ‘Divisions’ LP is out tomorrow (March 5) and will be available digitally everywhere, including Spotify and Apple Music. It can also be ordered directly from the artist via Bandcamp.

Aura Davis Premieres ‘Die Alone’ Single (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Aura Davis has released her new single and video titled ‘Die Alone’. A solid mix of electronica, power-beat, piano, and that original something that Aura has within her voice. Her voice is captivating on many levels. A combination o angelic and experience. Add to that a solid monster of a hook and you have her new single ‘Die Alone’. Beautifully crafted in its dark and somber overtone, the song is clearly a stylistic evolution for Aura. She will be one to watch…. and listen to.

Jammerzine Exclusive Zoom Interview Recap for March 15, 2021 (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Sophia Ciravolo recaps her most recent interviews in this episode of Jammerzine’s The Week in #Indie for March 15, 2021.

Jammerzine’s The Week in #Indie for 3/15/2021

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with the rockstar juggernaut known as Hueston, formerly of The Blancos. Musician Abe Grossman gives an exclusive interview.

The Brightside of 2020 (A Jammerzine Exclusive)

Jammerzine’s The Week in #Indie presents a special about the best in independent music. We all know that 2020 wasn’t the best of years and we’ve all had to endure isolation physically and mentally. But we must highlight those wonderful bright sides of this year with this presentation of great music.

Flor and the Sea Premiere ‘A Candid Lie’ Video (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Flor and the Sea have officially released their new video titled ‘A Candid Lie’. As if filmed in a different era where people could convene in harmony and not intervene for quarantine, ‘A Candid Lie’ surrounds the current state of things with a sonic atmosphere of inclusion and infusion of love and endurance in that ‘you are not alone’ and, after we survive, we should remember to thrive.

In regards to the album ‘Kings & Queens’, Grandiose is scope from that first track (A Candid Lie), and continuing the solid set of hooks throughout, this ambitious set of songs sets a style and mood within the confines of the audio that show Flor and the Sea as impressive songwriters as much as expressive artists.

While each track fits in the overall sound, each has its own personality traits that range from introspection to extroversion and everywhere in between. Progression and virtuosity in the guise of mainstream pop.

ABOUT FLOR AND THE SEA & ‘KINGS & QUEENS’

The songs of Flor and the Sea’s debut EP Kings & Queens invite their listeners to surrender themselves to the stream of music: to dream, to dance and to defy the world’s insistent tumult for a moment. Rich in stylistic fusion, pop elements meld with electronica references throughout their songwriting, inviting a host of esoteric influences from dubstep to synth pop to trap to join them. It’s a melting pot of style that recalls the work of Flume, Miike Snow or Alt-J.

Co-produced by composer Dieter Dolezel and mixed by Moritz Enders (Casper, Kraftclub), the songs are a multidimensional exploration of sound. From the lilting, mythology-evoking arpeggios of ‘Arcadia’ to the propulsive electro ambiance of ‘Dark Minds’, and the bleak dystopian piano keys chiming throughout ‘Reconnect’, Kings & Queens reveals a restless group with a unique musical chemistry, one not keen on traveling the same musical road twice.

Munich-based indie/electropop duo Flor and the Sea was originally founded in 2015 as a five-piece project. With the release of debut singles ‘Hold Your Breath’ and ‘Shed No Tear’, as well as bigger live gigs at Digital/Analog Festival and the Muffat Winterfest among others, the band generated a lot of buzz in short time and was featured as ‘Band of the Week’ by the Suddeutsche Zeitung/SZ Junge Leute in early 2017. After the band split up later that year, Marc Aretz (guitar/synth) and Chaem (vox) decided to keep Flor and the Sea alive as a duo.

They redesigned their sound from scratch, incorporating influences from bands like Alt J, Radiohead, and Portishead. The singles ‘Dark Minds’ and ‘Reconnect’ were birthed from the rubble and led to widespread acclaim, receiving regular airplay on radio stations like Ego-FM, Bayern 3, M94.5, and BR Puls, and landing positive reviews on international blogs like Composer’s Toolbox and York Calling. Capping it all, the duo performed live on Radio Fritz ‘Live on Air’ for the first time.

Alongside the production of their debut EP Kings & Queens, Flor and The Sea also resumed live performances in 2019 and put together an elaborate new program with their own light show, visuals, masks, and the support of additional live musicians. The first taste of this show was presented at renowned festivals Theatron Musiksommer and Sound of Munich Now in 2019.

ReMission International Releases TOS2020 (Trentemøller Remix) (The Week in #Indie Segment)

ReMission International has just shed light on Trentemøller’s take on the multinational COVID-19 relief track titled ‘TOS2020’. Trentemøller gives an obvious departure from both the original track from The Mission as well as the first collaboration released last month. More subdued and introverted while containing the obvious Trentemøller style, this remix is an introversion-conversion meant for personal reflection and as a valve for the emotions in this isolation that we all face and desperately feel.

The ‘Tower of Strength’ begins with the power of music.

ABOUT TOS2020 & TRENTEMØLLER REMIX

TOS2020 – the remake of The Mission’s anthemic hit ‘Tower Of Strength’ released to raise money for COVID-related charities worldwide – is out now, along with two new videos – for the Trentemøller remix and a new lyric video featuring many of the artists involved. All proceeds to charities personally chosen by each contributor.

From #TOS2020 creator Wayne Hussey: “This new video for the beautiful Trentemøller remix of ‘Tower Of Strength 2020’ was directed by James Sharples. The live footage is taken from a Mission video and shows us setting up before a gig, and it deliberately ends on a hopeful note to remind us that in the not too distant future we can all get together to make and enjoy loud music in a room again.”

“At the moment the money raised by TOS2020 is close to £100k, which is fantastic. It won’t stop once it’s out and will continue to raise money as long as orders are placed and streaming and publishing revenues come in. The funds will continue to accumulate, which is exactly what we wanted…. I want to keep thanking everyone for their support – it’s a hard time financially for people and there’s a long road ahead. The digital bundle contains 5 awesome tracks for just £2.99, it all helps those that need it most and the proceeds will be divided and distributed equally among all the beneficiaries. Thank you.”

The full version video, directed and edited by Savannah Perry, offers insight into the TOS2020 ‘Beholden To The Front-Line Workers Of The World mix’, revealing who sings which lines, who plays which guitar solo, drums, etc. throughout the song. Earlier, Vincente Cordero / Industrialism Films presented another video for the TOS2020 single.

Collaborators include: Andy Rourke, Billy Duffy, Budgie, Evi Vine, Gary Numan, James Alexander Graham, Jay Aston, Julianne Regan, Kevin Haskins, Kirk Brandon, Lol Tolhurst, Martin Gore, Michael Aston, Michael Ciravolo, Midge Ure, Miles Hunt, Rachel Goswell, Richard Fortus, Robin Finck, Steve Clarke, Tim Palmer, Trentemøller

BACKGROUND FROM WAYNE HUSSEY:

“When Covid-19 hit I started receiving messages asking ‘why don’t you re-issue Tower Of Strength for the front line workers?’ The song had apparently been adopted as an anthem by some NHS workers, and it got me thinking that I would like to contribute something to the greater cause at this unprecedented time and the only thing I could really contribute is music. So in conjunction with my good friend Michael Ciravolo, I came up with the idea of recording a new version of Tower Of Strength for charity by enlisting the help of musician friends and acquaintances.”

Produced by Wayne Hussey and co-produced and mixed by Tim Palmer. Except * remix by Trentemøller and ** remix by Albie Mischenzingerzen.

COLLABORATORS INCLUDE:

Andy Rourke, Billy Duffy, Budgie, Evi Vine, Gary Numan, James Alexander Graham, Jay Aston, Julianne Regan, Kevin Haskins, Kirk Brandon, Lol Tolhurst, Martin Gore, Michael Aston, Michael Ciravolo, Midge Ure, Miles Hunt, Rachel Goswell, Richard Fortus, Robin Finck, Steve Clarke, Tim Palmer, Trentemøller.

From TOS2020 collaborators:

“Being given the chance to do some good to raise money for people and animals struggling in these frightening times by singing one of the best songs ever written was such an easy thing to say yes to. An absolute honour to be involved.”
– Gary Numan

“Today as we face an unprecedented crisis with COVID 19, we have to be united in purpose to help humanity and especially the disenfranchised and impoverished among us, survive. Music can be a powerful way to join us all together and help those that need it most now.”
– Lol Tolhurst

“I’ve seen and heard Tower of Strength played often and I’ve experienced its effect and the impact it has on others. It’s an anthemic song of hope, comfort and joy, with a message that now seems more relevant than ever. I hope this project, in which I am privileged to be involved, brings a little light into the shade and allows us all to, albeit momentarily, focus on an ‘afterwards’.”
– Julianne Regan

“You get a message from Wayne Hussey asking if you can put a vocal (alongside a great list of singers, musicians and friends) on a reworking of a massive track in the repertoire of The Mission to aid COVID-19 charities around the globe – you say yes and get it done as well as you can.”
– Kirk Brandon

“I did it coz Wayne asked me to and I love Wayne.”
– Billy Duffy

“Being asked to contribute to making a piece of music isn’t overly taxing for a musician. I’m just pleased Wayne didn’t ask me to perform brain surgery or fly a jumbo jet, something which takes some form of skill.”
– Midge Ure

“My positive of the pandemic has been connecting to kindred spirits. Honoured to lend a hand.”
 Budgie

“I would like it known that, if asked, I would do absolutely anything for Wayne Hussey. Tower Of Strength is utter perfection: it is daring in its intent and supremely executed in both its original recording and every single time I have seen it performed live. To be asked to contribute to this new version was a very emotional experience for me. So many intense memories came flooding back as I sang, there were tears, I can assure you of that.”
– Miles Hunt

“Direct Relief is an organisation that helps people in times of emergency like natural disasters or in times of poverty by getting medical equipment and supplies to where they are needed most. At the moment they are obviously heavily focused on Covid-19.”
– Martin Gore (on Direct Relief, his nominated charity)

“Love and gratitude.”
– Robin Finck

“I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this project – I always loved this song and asked Wayne if I could take a crack at John Paul Jones’ string arrangement, which I have always admired. Hopefully, my take on it does it justice.”
– Richard Fortus

“The power we have collectively is transformative … I love and admire Wayne and the band and the warmth and intention behind this release. I know the power of this song and I feel so honoured to have been invited to join so many celebrated artists, this is a beautiful star in the darkest of times and I know the difference it will make.”
– Evi Vine

“To be amongst these amazing artists that I’m a huge fan of and have so much respect for is a true honour, especially for such an important cause. The sacrifice that all the amazing NHS staff and key workers have made is truly humbling and inspiring. To be part of an incredible group of people that want to give something back and show their gratitude is something I’m extremely proud of.”
– James Alexander Graham

“When I was asked by Wayne to be part of this fantastic charity project, I immediately said yes! If I could contribute to supporting the hard work fighting COVID-19 by making a remix of Tower Of Strength, that was a way for me to make a small difference. I’m very honoured to be a part of this.”
– Trentemøller

“I signed on for this project because I felt that it would be a great way to raise a lot of funds for those in need at this time. When I heard all the names of artists who were collaborating, I knew that it would turn out very special. I’m very grateful to be given the opportunity to contribute to this marvellous project.”
– Kevin Haskins

“When Wayne emailed me with the idea of contributing vocals to this project I jumped at the chance. Tower of Strength is such an anthemic song it’s only fitting that this has been done to support the various charities. It’s an honour for me to be a small part of the process and what a stellar line up of people involved.”
– Rachel Goswell

“Not every day do you get the chance to play on one of your favourite songs with some of your favourite artists, and to have it be for all the right reasons and for an amazing cause.”
– Michael Ciravolo

“So honoured to be part of this wonderful project. It’s also interesting that three of the original performers on our – Gene Loves Jezebel – very first recording, ‘Shaving My Neck’ are reunited by chance some 37 years later: Julianne Regan, J.P, and myself. Hats off to Wayne and the Mission for giving this rendition for charity during this pandemic.”
– Michael Aston

“Absolutely buzzed and honestly flattered to be asked to not only add my voice to this wonderful recording but also give something back to our much loved and beleaguered NHS. The perfect song for these difficult and challenging days.”
– Jay Aston

An Interview with Salem’s Childe (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Salem’s Childe has officially done a Jammerzine exclusive interview! And why I announced it in that way and am so excited about this particular interview is the fact that I know these guys personally and have even been in bands with one of them. Salem’s Childe is a band that I have followed from the inception. And one thing I can vouch for above all else is this is a band that is going about its musical career path on its own terms. And you will hear some of that in this interview.

One thing I must say before you listen is that, because I know these guys, this is more of a conversation than an interview. Sometimes that happens. But, I feel that is a good thing because we cover a lot of ground about Salem’s Childe but, unlike most interviews, we get to know about the minds behind the music as people. And these are good people. You will get to know a little more about why Salem’s Childe is the band that they are.

The new album by Salem’s Childe titled ‘The Sin That Saves You’ will release on October 9, 2020, via Pavement Entertainment.

About Punt Guns

Punt Guns officially release their new track and video titled ‘The Most Sacred Thing In The Universe’ on Jammerzine. Featuring the vocal debut of bassist Karisma, there couldn’t be a better debut than ‘The Most Sacred Thing In The Universe’. The song is a sucker punch to the senses and a hard hit to the ears.

The pandemic actually feels a bit more isolating now after hearing this track because I can’t help but think ‘Why does all the best live music have to come out when there are no concerts?’. ‘The Most Sacred Thing In The Universe’ is one of those tracks. This song was meant for the crowd and I can’t wait for the day that it’s played live for those crowds. Keep this song at the ready.

About Cambry H

Cambry H has premiered his new video and single titled ‘Goodnight’ today (September, 24th). On that initial listen, Cambry has an honesty about him. An honesty that transcends borders, beliefs, and social boundaries that most of us impede upon ourselves because that’s what we were taught. But Cambry lays on the table. Take it or leave it. It will be there all the same. And that is what we need at this moment. Add to that a soulful voice that perfectly frames the emotion of the notion and you have a timeless beauty in audio format. A future classic if you will.

The video is more of a visual track to the sound instead of a soundtrack to the visual. Kept simple. Clean. Almost naked with feeling and bare with conviction.

About Flor and the Sea

About Julian Shah-Tayler

Julian Shah-Tayler a.k.a. ‘The Singularity’ has premiered his new video for the track titled ‘Devil Knows’ on Jammerzine. A vivid combination of a pop hit in waiting and electro-rock mix with a solid rhythm and beat, this version of ‘Devil Knows’ gives us a journey into collaboration with sub-bass highlights and sprinkles of synth.

The video captures the antics of a dainty dominatrix played by Eva Strangelove and her day-to-day goings-on from the mundane to the strange giving me the impression that we all have our own lifestyle and what’s normal and not is left to our own interpretation. What’s also normal is the meaning of the song. Loss is a constant in life and how we lose touch with those around us, whether it be from distance in location or distance in views or anything else is normal as well and, through that loss, we always gain a part of ourselves.

The video was “socially distanced” by the exquisite “Eva Strangelove” famed burlesque performer (and clearly developed comedic actress) from her house and dungeon. David j provides artful interjections from his home in LOS ANGELES To be featured in the ruby rock version. Julian broadcasts from the inferno of a burning Pasadena, California. (Last shot featuring the sun with zero filters).

About of1000faces

of1000faces has released their new video for the track titled ‘Astronomica’. As the titled track from the album of the same name, it’s only fitting that this is how that track should sound. Spacious, grandiose, atmospheric, and more. To me, it also sounds worldly. ‘Astronomica’ has that feel that makes you reflect on the world around you and gives you that sense that you are a part of it and not just an observer.

The ‘Astronomica’ album was released digitally on September 25 and is available across online stores such as Apple Music and streaming platforms such as Spotify and Bandcamp.

About ReMission International

ReMission International has just shed light on Trentemøller’s take on the multinational COVID-19 relief track titled ‘TOS2020’. Trentemøller gives an obvious departure from both the original track from The Mission as well as the first collaboration released last month. More subdued and introverted while containing the obvious Trentemøller style, this remix is an introversion-conversion meant for personal reflection and as a valve for the emotions in this isolation that we all face and desperately feel.

The ‘Tower of Strength’ begins with the power of music.

About ASM

ASM has dropped their new album titled ‘Blue Cocoon’. The first track, ‘Marathon’ came as a complete surprise to me. Almost anti-climatic, the track actually fits almost perfectly as to signify the slow burn that ‘Blue Cocoon’ achieves as an album. that burn continues through as an eventual crescendo that encapsulates the album and gives that sense of ascension to the listener that feels earned by the time ‘Blue Cocoon’ concludes.

The samples are welcome obscurity that combines retro-bliss in concert with the style of the album in this modern time of isolation.

With a more stripped sound and simple direction, ASM embraces these new set of nostalgic hooks while moving forward in a musical progression that gives an optimism desperately needed that’s rarely spoken.
