Interview

An Interview with J67

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with Julie Infanti and Pete Denton from the pop duo known as J67. J67 is one of those groups that, through subtle genre hopping, are able to get their sound down to what they want while keeping it appealing to multiple fanbases and fans of different kinds of music.

Hailing from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, J67 make music for the world with a sharp sense of musical styles and songwriting that is as diverse as it is appealing. Check out their double singles below for a proper introduction.

And, in this interview, we talk with Julie and Pete about their music, the indie scene in Cyprus, adjusting their schedule to a post COVID world, and how J67 got it’s beginnings. Enjoy!’

About J67

Both originating from the UK, Julie Infanti and Pete Denton are a female/male vocal/guitar duo, based in Cyprus.

Before coming together, Julie was performing in Cyprus and the UK and Pete in bands in the UK. Pete also had a stint at band management, working with David Arden (son of Don Arden and brother of Sharon Osbourne) David was an integral part of the Don Arden management team and Jet Records in the 60’s and 70’s and Pete learned a lot from David. Pete met David through his sister Sharon when she expressed an interest in Pete’s son’s (Pete Denton jnr) 1st band “Cube”.

Pete later became a member of The Kooks. Jules & Pete, began performing together in 2019 in bars (including “Hard Rock Cafe”) and hotels all over the east of Cyprus. Back in the summer of 2020, whilst performing, they were approached by the musical instrument manufacturer “Roland/Boss” and offered an Artist Sponsorship Agreement, which in turn led to the addition of some incredible new sound equipment for the duo courtesy of Roland/Boss.

Towards the end of 2020 and into 2021 Jules & Pete began writing their own original material and decided on the name J67 to promote this new project.

Their debut double A side single ‘Heaven’ and ‘Good Times’ written by Julie & Pete is to be released through Blind Dog Records on June 25th and will be available for download across all major platforms. In a typical year Jules & Pete and J67 will perform to over 18,000 people.

Jammerzine Exclusive: An Interview with Hybrid

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with a duo of masterclass composers and musicians that go under the moniker of Hybrid. With their new album titled ‘Black Halo’ releasing tomorrow via Distinctive Records, Hybrid are poised at just the right time to release a new album on the scale of originality and creativity as I have seen in this past year, to say the least.

Hybrid is not only a unique music project, but a pair of composers who have been in the game since the 90’s and have written music for over 30 feature films, computer games and trailers including Fifty Shades FreedX-Men: WolverineBillionaire Ransom, the Fast and Furious franchise.

That culminates into the music of ‘Black Halo’ A concept album in flow and style and a soundtrack to that future set of memories you will get. You will hear me in the interview praise this album for a few reasons. Almost in a gushing manor. There is reason for this. Maybe I heard ‘Black Halo’ at just the right time. Maybe I heard it in just the right setting. To be honest, part of the reason I say this is the best album I have heard in a while was how it changed my mood and my outlook for the day with the first track and sustained that feeling, modifying it with each song, through the end. Prompting a second listen. That is what music should do. introspect, interpret, influence, and enhance. And I can say, with all honesty, that this has the potential to do the same for you. There are many layers in each song on ‘Black Halo’. Musical, emotional, and spiritual.

In today’s interview, we talk about the songwriting and creative process that defines Hybrid as well as the album itself. This is as much a good conversation as it is an informative interview. Enjoy!

About Hybrid

The sweetest musical spots are always found deep between the contrasts. Dark and light, orchestral and digital, dramatic and delicate, raw and polished, sadness and bliss. Searched for by many, discovered by few, conquered by Hybrid; it’s a creative place where any story can be told. From studio to stadiums, dancefloor bangers to symphonic film scores, the clue’s been in their name since day one.

Hybrid’s electric spark for splicing musical DNA has been evident since their first ever single in 1996; Symphony, a cult club anthem where orchestral dynamics met jungle-inspired breakbeats. 25 years, six studio albums, myriad tours and a few line-up splices later, their ever-evolving, often bass-laced,

sound remains a constant in an accelerate scene. And that same thirst for fusion they began with is now nuclear. Attuned and amplified over years of writing and performing with their full band; it’s a fine-tuned alchemy that runs deep in everything Mike and Charlotte Truman do. Be it conjuring powerful dynamic electronic productions that can tear down underground music havens like Fabric London, working on scores for Hollywood hits from Hobbs & Shaw to Hercules to Interlude In Prague or living, writing and recording in a family home with over 60 animals.

Their CV is a dizzying litany of pinch-yourself moments and accomplishments, including collaborations and credits with luminaries as far-ranging as Cypress Hill, Perry Farrell and Hooky from New Order. With band mates Stu Morgan (guitars and bass) and Simon Hanson (drums) they continue to take their art to incredible places through speakers, stage and screen. And at the heart of it all is simply this: powerful storytelling.

A deep emotional narrative runs through all Hybrid music. You can sense it in Charlotte’s stirring songwriting and vocals, you can hear it in Mike’s formidable sound design and production, you can tangibly feel it in the drama, tension and release of the arrangements. Their latest album – Black Halo – is the best example of this so far. Largely written during the turbulence of 2020, the album celebrates the perseverance and triumph of the human spirit. No matter what life throws at us, we thrive and survive. To enhance this narrative even more, and join further dots between their love of music and the big screen, they’ve created three conceptual videos with writer/novelist James Scudamore and actor Edmund Kingsley. Weaving sci-fi themes with the stark, hard-hitting reality of the 21st century, Hybrid’s visual fusion is just palpable as the music itself.

Following on from their critically acclaimed 2018 release Light Of The Fearless – an album eight years in the making which saw them execute a precision come-back with a sold out tour – Black Halo reaches for those sweet spots between the contrasts once again. Somewhere deep between organic and electronic, faith and escapism, strings and synths, drums and bass, fear and hope, it’s a place where Hybrid can tell their boldest stories so far.

A band whose electrorock influence echoed throughout the ‘90s straight up to today, Hybrid have always been on the forefront of the electronic music scene. Merging Jimi Hendrix-styled guitar riffs via guitarist/vocalist Stu Morgan into Mike’s sonic soundscapes and punctuated by drummer Simon Hanson’s meticulous rhythms, Hybrid’s music allows Charlotte’s clear and pristine vocals to float and weave effortlessly.

Originally formed in 1995 at the height of the UK-led Breakbeat Era, Hybrid became leaders of an electronic movement that encompassed a dizzying litany of pinch-yourself moments and accomplishments, including collaborations and credits with luminaries as far-ranging as Cypress Hill, Perry Farrell and Peter Hook from New Order. In their own right, Hybrid continue to take their art to incredible places through speakers, stage and screen. And at the heart of it all is simply this: powerful storytelling.

Hybrid is:

  • Charlotte Truman (vocals, piano, synths, guitar)
  • Mike Truman (sound design, producer)
  • Stu Morgan (vocals, guitars, bass)
  • Simon Hanson (drums, percussion, backing vocals).

An Exclusive Interview with Boy Breaking Glass (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with Boy Breaking Glass bassist Joe Mantell. Their new album, ‘Desolations’, premiered on Jammerzine on June 24th and was released on the 25th. The album is a darkly decadent set of songs that really capture the overall sound of Boy Breaking Glass will making a solid set of tracks that have that flow to it that lets you know this is an album that you can listen to all they way through. However, each song has its own unique personality.

High points are throughout with a lot going on in the background. Listen to the guitars, you will hear layers of sonic goodness flow throughout, with an almost goth level vocal set that gives ‘Desolations’ the bulk of its personality.

An Interview with Information Society (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with the absolute legends of synth-pop, electronic, MTV Generation, and, above all, original music, in the form of Information Society. Today we talk to Paul Robb, co-founder of INSOC, and their new album titled ‘ODDFellows’. What makes ODDFellows special is, and you will get the information about this in the interview, that this is a spatial collaboration with THX. Yes, that THX. The ones that make everything sound cool and rich. This is, in fact, the first collaboration between THX and a musical artist. And this is one of the many reasons INSOC is considered pioneers in the music industry. Not just to be the first, but to be willing to take the risk.

And, in regards to ‘ODDFellows’, we get plenty of risks. As stated in the interview, there are times where this is a different band and there are times where classic INSOC is there at the forefront. And, to be that original after all of these years is what makes them last. Because it’s fun.

‘ODDFellows’ releases on August 6th (Hakatak International (digital); and Negative Gain Records (CD/vinyl); release date: TBA).

An Exclusive Interview with Bishop Tha DJ (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with underground legend DJ Bishop Tha DJ. Having just released his new album ‘#trueOGseries Vol 2: New Day Co-Op’, I get a chance to have a really good conversation about a diverse and informative, yes informative, album with one of the kings of collaboration. To say king of collaboration is an understatement. To say the least. Just check out the talent on this album. You have Bishop swapping swing with his mega-talent brother, Sun Zulu. You have Ashley S., Defcee, Eze Jackson…. I could go on. As we say in this interview, #trueOGseries is hopefully a roadmap as to where hip hop is going. Forward to its roots with a new perspective. Moving forward.

An Interview with The Neverlutionaries (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with The Neverlutionaries founder Christopher Harold Wells. Having released what I consider one of the most diverse albums in the last few years, The Neverlutionaries is as much Christopher’s music lab as much as it is music project.

Having cut his teeth and added his resume with some of the most prolific people in music, Christopher now demonstrates his extreme diversity with The Neverlutionaries new eponymous album filled with tracks that really make the album sound like it has multiple artists throughout. Like completely different bands. I have no other way to say it, so I just said it. Check out the playlist below.

In this interview, we talk with Christopher about The Neverlutionaries, the songwriting and recording process and how he maximizes his output, especially in this pandemic, as well as the next evolution for The Neverlutionaries.

An Interview with Jonny Kosmo (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Jonny Kosmo has given an exclusive interview to Jammerzine. I announce that because, when you hear his music, you will see. This artist is a true original. From his music to his life and everywhere in between.

And, in this interview, we talk about his new album titled ‘Pastry’, to be released June 4th on Feeding Tube Records and Dinosaur City Records (AUS). We also talk about his innovative video from ‘Pastry’, for the song ‘Fool’, featuring animation with personality by Peter Nichols.

Whatever your musical tastes are, I think it is safe to say that you will find space on your plate for Jonny Kosmo. His music comes from that part in all of us that wants to know our individuality and inner child. Jonny has found both and made them partners.

“There are two sides to every coin. “Fool” is about how our character struggles can also be our greatest assets. In this case, it is love and connection with another that allows the defensiveness and protection of the fool archetype to shift to that of a fool for life. I aimed to capture the movement from the rigidity of taking ourselves too seriously to the humor of being human.  This song is accompanied by a video made by Kevin Kearney, Peter Nichols (animation), and myself.”

Human Drama’s Johnny Indovina & Mark Balderas Exclusive Interview (The Week in #Indie Segment)

In this Jammerzine Exclusive, we talk to literal legends of music in the form of Johnny Indovina and Mark Balderas from Human Drama. And by legends, I mean immensely talented musicians and true human beings. Human Drama is one of those sacred icons of music having evolved musically for almost five decades and showing no signs of slowing down while doing everything on their own terms. This, to me, is that unspoken achievement rarely achieved and almost never accomplished.

Their latest album, titled ‘Blurred Images‘, is a continuance of their evolution of revolution that began with ‘Hopes Prayers Dreams Heart Soul Mind Love Life Death’ and refined and remolded through ‘Broken Songs for Broken People‘. Retaining that core sound while evolving into new forms of music is the sign of true musicians and artisans.

On ‘Blurred Images’ throughout, you get a set of personal takes on the snapshots of life. You will hear about this in detail in the interview. Musically, the album is blurred in genres at times yet comes together succinctly as a concept. Some will say that this fits a metaphor of a scrapbook filled with images, but personally, I feel that it is a single canvas of paintings molding into one another. Not knowing where one begins and another ends, but, collectively, make something whole.

Jammerzine Exclusive: An Interview with Janna Jamison

Jammerzine presents an exclusive Zoom interview with Janna Jamison, an LA/Nashville-based singer-songwriter, vocalist, and multi-talented musician. She is most known for her 2020 EP entitled ‘White Guys That Play Jazz’ accompanied with her single ‘Paris’.

As a student at Belmont University School of Music, Janna Jamison shares her incredibly interesting perspective on the music scene as she explores her hometown influences and how they interact in a country/indie-rock music environment.

Initially giving off an Indie singer-songwriter vibe, Janna Jamison is hesitant to label herself: as of now, her sound is extremely experimental. By incorporating elements such as Jazz and indie rock, Janna Jamison explores and tests around with different genres, bringing something entirely unique to the table.

In this interview, Janna details her history and background in music, as well as her pop-music influences and advice to other aspiring young musicians.

Janna Jamison is releasing an upcoming EP this year called ‘Pulling My Clothes’ on all major streaming platforms. She is also premiering a music video for a song on her upcoming project called ‘Invitation to A Beheading’ which includes vintage-musical theater influences.
