Mile Me Deaf Releases ‘ECCO’ Album (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Mile Me Deaf has released their new album titled ‘Ecco’ via Siluh Records. Featuring a much more synthesized and refined sound, Wolfgang Möstl, the mind behind the music, give that signature sound a kick with a solid set of hooks within the electronic realm and sends out a solid set of tracks each with their own purpose with the love of an artist and the care of a producer.

ABOUT MILE ME DEAF

Following the release of Mile Me Deaf’s last full-length LP – Alien Age – the long-since fruitful project of Austrian visionary multi-instrumentalist Wolfgang Möstl seemed to have run its course, coming to a head with a vibrant vision of a colorful Pop dystopia. Having started out in the early-00s with his noise-rock outfit Killed By 9V Batteries, Möstl has become one of the keys – and most prolific – cogs in Vienna’s busy viral underground scene, brimming with DIY groups and exploratory solo projects. Transcending the confines of the scene too, Möstl has also toured the US twice with both Mile Me Deaf and anarchic fuzzy Pop group Sex Jams, a song by the former also featuring on US drama series This Is Us.

So – where to go from there? As Möstl puts it: “It’s hard to write songs about a world you basically destroyed.” The intervening years saw Möstl meet increasing demands for his production chops (Dives, Voodoo Jürgens), work with his Stoner Rock outfit Melt Downer, Vaporwave project Voyage Futur, plus singer-songwriter Clara Luzia – and most importantly of all, become a father.

Inescapably drawn back to Mile Me Deaf though, ‘Ecco’ manages to somehow find Möstl at the peak of his Pop prowess. The revived bionic project’s soundscapes are now popular synths, samplers, and a futurist pulse rather than guitars, underlining Ecco’s central theme of repetition and rebirth. Fuelled by an impulsive stream-of-consciousness writing process, Möstl finds himself guided down a dark – and basic – path towards a glittering album of potent post-psychedelic, post-vaporwave, post-human Pop about birth and death.

‘Ecco’ explores how everything, ultimately, repeats itself. Built from loops and pulsing electronics as much as human fingers on keys and some of Möstl’s most captivating melodies, songs like ‘Stop And Rewind’, ‘Phase’, or ‘Loop’ have a clear message: “All is echoing infinitely.” As Möstl himself is well aware, the next stage of Mile Me Deaf is impossible to resist. ‘Ecco’ finds bliss in repetition, and assembles utterly intoxicating Pop grooves out the other side of his project’s first death.

Dives Premieres ‘100 Times’ Single (The Week in #Indie Segment)

DIVES released their new single titled ‘100 Times’ on June 17, 2020. We get a listen of the suave new track in all of its glory and shimmering originality. The track is a showcase of sorts and a perfect introduction track to what DIVES’ sound is and creativity can bring. The song is a strong blend of solid chord progressions and harmonies that soar and dive in unison causing that inevitable hit of the repeat button.

ABOUT DIVES

Teenage angst has paid off well, DIVES are now ready to have it all. DIVES know their capabilities, their strengths, and the songs they want to write. On their first album, titled ‘Teenage Years Are Over’, they now become an essential integrant within Europe’s big indie-bands.

With their first EP, DIVES got off to a dream start: In Dresden, they played in front of 12,000 people, headlined the Viennese Popfest, toured with Courtney Barnett, accompanied the Vengaboys at the Viennese Ballhausplatz and played various shows as support to established artists (Franz Ferdinand, Bilderbuch). Three years have passed since their formation at pink noise Girls Rock Camp and ever since, they not only toured Central and Eastern Europe, crashed big stages and important industry festivals (Reeperbahn Festival, c/o pop), but also did not back away from well-known underground venues (8mm Bar, Ostpol Dresden).

On their debut Teenage Years Are Over, DIVES channeled their energies together with producer and label-mate Wolfgang Möstl (Voodoo Jürgens, Clara Luzia, Nino Aus Wien). Their album is going to be released on the Viennese label Siluh Records. DIVES earned their spurs on tour and now they only comply with their own rules. In doing so, they do not need permission or well-intentioned advice.

“Appreciate your concern, you’re gonna stink and burn.“

DIVES accompany Surf-Garage-Pop with emancipated lyrics. They don’t shy away from speaking their mind. There’s no crying over missed chances, no pointless vanity, and no fake pretending for the sake of being part of something. This mindset also shows in their thoroughly produced music videos, most recently for the song Chico for which they teamed up with director Kevin Pham. It accentuates the trio’s refined aesthetics while they are riding a speedboat over the Vienna’s Danube River. On their first, full-length record, DIVES wave good-bye to the initial doubts – „Are we good enough? Where do we want to see ourselves? What will happen if our youthful easiness is gone?“. They found their answers: On the stage, in their songs and finally in themselves as friends and companions.

This is their new single ‘100 Times’.

Ask Carol Release ‘Run With You’ Video (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Ask Carol have released their new video for the track titled ‘Run With You’. And, with this being their first actual music video, there is no better way to make their visual debut than with the eye candy set forth with ‘Run With You’. ABOUT ASK CAROL

“Run With You” is Ask Carol’s first-ever real music video, made by the band themselves, under the corona-lockdown. Filmed around Carol’s home in the Norwegian woods, this short story portraits two girls, two sisters, desperate to get away. One of the sisters is in a bad, abusive relationship, reluctant to get away, while her sister tries to convince her otherwise. Eventually, she’s had enough, and the abused sister takes matters into her own hands. They escape together as the story unfolds in a dark, Nordic environment that sets the mood for this dramatic story. Given the special circumstance of the corona-lockdown and that Carol, Ask (Ask is a real Norwegian name) and Carol’s sister was quarantined together, the three is the only people involved in the music video. Carol and Ask filmed, produced, directed, acted in, and edited the music video, and Carol´s sister played the sister in the movie. A real Corona-lockdown DIY project.

“Run With You” is Ask Carol’s first single of 2020, a catchy disco-punk alt-pop tune with a retro vibe. Intimate vocals and grungy guitars setting the mood, with a dreamy background and pulsating beat.

The first of several releases planned for this Summer and Fall, leading up to debut album early 2021. The song was written long before these challenging corona times, but lately, the song has come to mean something more to us. We feel it represents a longing for just going away, to get away from it all, a feeling that has grown more intense as we all have to stay home for such a long time…

Bentley Jones Premieres ‘I Could Be Your Girl’ Video (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Bentley Jones has just dropped his new video titled ‘I Could Be Your Girl’. Bentley is one of those artists that, when he releases something, I quietly think to myself ‘About time…’. I say this because he is a constantly and truly evolving artist. Each release is somewhat of a reinvention of both the artist and the music. This is just as true with ‘I Could Be Your Girl’.

The video is at times hypnotic and captivating yet gives that sense of solace and yearning. A dark longing for love and romantic closeness in a time of social distancing lending to that certain something we all feel at times, especially these times, in that we all need someone. I hear the words ‘Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder’ when I first watched this video and now those words have a meaning to me. This is a message to the world that beauty is more than sexual and sultry; it’s something we all have, and by knowing that you can get the deeper meaning of the music.

to me, Bentley is an artist who deserves everything he’s worked for and worked very hard for. Now entering his tenth year as an artist, he is just as fresh and new as ever and it shows.

ABOUT BENTLEY JONES

Bentley is continuing his reign as an independent pop pioneer by wrapping up his 10th anniversary before launching a brand new 2020 album. He has single-handedly amassed over 40 million sales and gathered remix credits for the likes of Madonna, Britney Spears, Kygo & Whitney Houston, Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga (who also follows him on Twitter).

Realizing he could continue his success as a fully independent artist, Bentley unleashed 2015’s “The Rebellion” to critical acclaim; “Articulate, brilliant and haunting.” (BuzzJack) “The must-listen-to album of 2015.” (Muzikman) “Let this album be an inspiration to us all.” (J-Wave’s 25 Best Indie Albums of 2015). 2017’s “Unravelling” was also a smash with critics being described as “powerful and meaningful… Bentley has bounced back better than ever!” (Essentially Pop) and became his highest-earning independent album at the time with over 310,000 sales.

Bentley’s 10th anniversary has been the colossal celebration we’ve come to expect from such a reputable artist. Proceedings kicked off at the end of 2018 with a live performance on Japan’s prestigious music show “Nodojiman THE WORLD!” (12.1 million viewers) which coincided with the release of his Japanese single “Lay Down on My Heart”. The song was premiered in the UK by BBC Radio and was the first-ever J-pop song broadcast by BBC Introducing leading to Bentley being awarded the “Sound of 2019” (BBC).

His 10th-anniversary album “Translated” – a celebration of his Japan debut – gained 270,000 sales during its summer release resulting in his decision to reside in Japan where he headlined at the Tokyo Summer Bon Festival. His bold new image – an enticing amalgamation of muscles, stilettos, lace, and skin that celebrates his fluidity, sexuality, and defiance – is a telling statement of the difficult journey he’s been on to get here. Following acclaim from Billboard Japan (“a must-listen-to artist”), BBC Radio (“incredible”, Sound of 2019) and Miami Beach Pride (“an LGBTQ+ icon”), independent pop juggernaut Bentley Jones is finally delighting fans with lead single “I Could Be Your Girl” (out now) – a delicious slice of sultry, sexy pop R&B that (according to Jones) “was composed almost entirely in a dream.”

Bentley has enjoyed a considerable amount of success in Japan, which is why last year he turned his entire life upside down and moved to Tokyo. At first, he flourished; performing on the prestigious TV show “Nodojiman THE WORLD!” to 12.1 million viewers and headlining the Tokyo Bon Summer Festival.

However, the company promising to sponsor his visa – as well as provide promotion and touring for a new album – suddenly about-turned and began pulling their support from a contract they had been negotiating for months. As Bentley explains in a video blog, the company said he was “too controversial” and became “worried about what people will think”.

Ben made the heart-breaking decision to walk away from the contract and return home to the UK.

“After working so hard and risking everything, it was soul-destroying,” Ben expresses. “But this album and these songs are fundamental to who I am and what I stand for. It feels amazing to finally start releasing them exactly the way I intended.”

Last month Ben helped raise over $14,000 for community aid performing at Pride Collective – a virtual festival formed by the several US Prides. Miami Beach Pride was so impressed they selected Bentley to represent them at Global Pride on June 27th where he will make the first-ever live performance of “Girl” alongside such legends as Adam Lambert, Kesha, Todrick Hall and more.

I Like Trains Premiere ‘The Truth’ Video (The Week in #Indie Segment)

I Like Trains drops their new video for the track titled ‘The Truth’. Almost in a style set in its own noir, I Like Trains begs the question ‘Is that the best you can do?’. Set in these unique and trying times, I like Trains gives that tell-all to the truth with a hard-hitting ode to social questioning in a time of social distancing. And it works.

While the single is available across digital platforms now, the full ‘KOMPROMAT’ album will be released on August 21 on black vinyl LP, limited edition silver vinyl LP and CD, as well as digitally.

ABOUT I LIKE TRAINS & ‘THE TRUTH’

Leeds-based trailblazers, I LIKE TRAINS present ‘The Truth’, an eye-opening lead track that forebodes their potent, hard-hitting new album ‘KOMPROMAT’, written as an instinctive gut reaction to a world that has changed beyond all recognition. This is a record that digs beneath populism’s rise, from the divide and conquers tactics that caused Brexit in the UK, to Trump’s ascent in America and the subsequent reign of lies and misinformation, to discover the grubby hands that have engineered it all.

The British quintet will release their fourth studio album via Schubert Music’s newly founded Atlantic Curve label in late summer. This is the band’s first record since 2012’s ‘The Shallows’, which focused on how the internet and smart technology is re-wiring the human mind and affecting our concentration spans. Now, with ‘KOMPROMAT’, it’s clear that this same technology, in the wrong hands, has taken an even more sinister turn. The game has changed – and I LIKE TRAINS have changed with it.

The accompanying deep-fake karaoke video was directed by the previous co-conspirator Michael Connolly, a Leeds born artist and designer. “The track is relentless and I wanted the film to feel the same. Claustrophobia and confusion were my watchwords. I combined deep-fakes, distorted visuals, and digital cut-up techniques to create an intense level of disorientation. It sums up the last four years in geopolitics for me,” says Connolly.

‘The Truth’ was the last track to come together during the group’s recording sessions – a summation of the way in which facts are bent and, in many cases, utterly dismantled. Over a burring build of disco-inflected post-punk that recalls LCD Soundsystem and early DFA Records, “The truth is no longer concerned with the facts”.

“I’d been writing this list on my phone for a couple of months, adding a couple of lines
to it every so often. I’d read a news article or a tweet and I’d make reference to it. I decided to dig out this list in the last couple of days in the studio [for this track]. It’s pretty much the order I wrote it in – it came together on the fifth take and it was a pretty cathartic process,” says the group’s vocalist and lyricist David Martin.

Formed in 2004, I LIKE TRAINS is made up of David Martin (vocals/guitar), Alistair Bowis (bass), Guy Bannister (guitar/synths), Simon Fogal (drums) and Ian Jarrold (guitar). They have never shied away from confronting the possibility of humanity’s collapse. Earlier records, like the towering Godspeed-influenced ‘Progress Reform’ (2006) and ‘Elegies to Lessons Learnt’ (2007) took tales of tragic characters and events from history and applied them to the modern-day, while ‘He Who Saw The Deep’ (2010) looked uneasily ahead to the climate change battle we are on the verge of losing.

While ‘KOMPROMAT’ sounds like none of those records, it contains DNA from all of them. I LIKE TRAINS has essentially gone back to go forwards in some ways, returning to some of the primary influences that inspired the band’s formation: Joy Division, The Birthday Party, Gang of Four, Television and The Velvet Underground.

“An I LIKE TRAINS record doesn’t really start to take shape until there’s a theme. That point came following Edward Snowden’s NSA leaks in 2013,” says David Martin.

“We didn’t set out to write a record about current affairs, but the path we set out on converged drastically with that daily discourse. The album inadvertently became about populist politics across the world. Brexit, Trump, Cambridge Analytics and covert Russian influence ended up at the centre of it all”.

At the time, Martin started writing about low-key, insidious intrusions on our privacy. As global events unfolded, however, so did the importance of those themes: the perception of what is true and what isn’t truly being challenged on a daily basis and how that confusion could be used to manipulate populations into thinking and voting in certain ways.

Several years ago, British filmmakers Ben Lankester and Matt Hopkins released the feature documentary ‘A Divorce Before Marriage’, which follows the band members over three years, capturing their struggles first-hand. Then, as now, one thing is for sure – while I LIKE TRAINS often look back and also to the future, ‘The Truth’ speaks very much of the here and now.

Tarah Who? Release ‘Pantomath’ Video (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Tarah Who? officially drop their new video titled ‘Pantomath’. One thing I absolutely love about Tarah Who? is the fact that they clearly evolve from one release to the next. Not just with music but stylistically and visually as well. ‘Pantomath’, as a video, has an almost Tarantino approach to it. But, more-so than that, there is this symbiosis between the song and the video that captures that essence that is not only Tarah Who? but independent music itself, or at least where #indie music should be. And that is a beautiful place to be.

ABOUT TARAH WHO? & ‘PANTOMATH’

Tarah Who?, the in-your-face, high energy L.A. duo, are back with a killer new video May 29, 2020, for their explosive and rousing song “Pantomath”.

Tarah Who? is Tarah G. Carpenter (vocals/guitar) and Corale Hervé (drums/backing vocals). These ladies are not afraid to stand up and say what they mean, especially to those who think they have all of the answers.

Carpenter says, “Pantomath” is a Punk Rock song. I wrote this song after a conversation I was having with another musician who had the constant speech of a “know it all”. He was criticizing every musician and their decisions and I was telling him in short that, “thankfully we do not all want the same kind of success.” She continued, “then later in the conversation, now talking about success, I was telling him, ” there is no one formula to success, otherwise it would be known and there would be no point in having a story and standing out.”

“Pantomath” was shot in the high desert of the Antelope Valley, CA. and produced by Nupur Mehrotra (@nupsmehra) and Apoorv Arora (@apoorvarora_10). It was directed by Ellinor Skeppström (@ellinorskeppstrom).

Deleo Releases ‘Mythomania’ (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Deleo drops their new single titled ‘Mythomania’ on June 19, 2020. By the first listen it is apparent that Deleo has that certain something where they can show that they’ve not only found their sound; they’ve crafted it. And crafted it in such a way that they are recognizable within those first few precious notes; within the timespan, it takes to grab the attention of even the most casual of listeners.

‘Mythomania’ has that beautiful hook that forces one to hit the quick rewind a few times just to recapture that initial ‘aha’ moment. There is nothing more perfect than to be introduced to a band or artist with such a track.

ABOUT DELEO & ‘MYTHOMANIA’

After the tantalizing foretaste of the toxic ballad ‘Unfair’, Deleo continues to distill the fruits of its 4-track EP with a new teaser in anticipation of the EP’s release. This time, with ‘Mythomania’, the Montpellier-based group reveals a more prickly and Rock side to its sweet poison.

The track begins innocently enough: a simple Folk guitar rends the air – I wouldn’t say ‘vulnerable’ since it’s a bit fast, a bit tense, but subtly – and then a few seconds later, a futurist city suddenly appears and you’re like rats. Watch out if you’re in the front row seats! Rats, but as lovely as the sounds of the dolphins in The Big Blue soundtrack by Eric Serra. Dolphins, but like androids that dream of electric sheep. Industrial dreams, tubular bells, and layering inspired by Archive’s Londinium, the dystopia of Blade Runner and The Fifth Element are all there. When it reaches the bridge, it all suddenly stops in the space of an instant: hypnotic, something expands naggingly and creepily like Radiohead’s ‘Dollars and Cents’. An impression of overlooking the underworld of Gotham or Dark City. With Emy Eris, the fire dragon and Daenerys, who spreads her wings with the passion of youth.

Yes, this new song by Deleo is a veritable short film. A tricky single – but what an experience and what a cliffhanger at the end! Once again, the maestro of British producers James Sanger (Suede, Dido, Keane, The Cure, Manic Street Preachers, etc.) had a lot to do with it.

With this second single, Deleo shows its Rock influences. It makes defining their music elusive while it is still firmly Pop. The reason for this? The band doesn’t know either! Far from being binary, they have multiple facets that sparkle like a gem. Corporeal yet radiant.

An Interview with The Mystery Plan (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with Jason Herring of The Mystery Plan. They say that originality comes in many forms and has many influences. That is no more evident than in The Mystery Plan’s new album titled Zsa Zsa (review HERE). And today we get to talk with Jason about that new and varied album as well as the beginnings of The Mystery Plan and how that magnificent sound came to be. We also get a glimpse of the gear behind the sound and how The Mystery Plan is making plans in this current global situation and where those plans will take them. ABOUT THE MYSTERY PLAN

Produced by the legendary John Fryer and Jason Herring, this record also features such notable guests as Micah Gaugh (The Veldt / Apollo Heights), Ian Masters, That Guy Smitty, and Snap Nation. This is not the first time The Mystery Plan has worked with Fryer, having previously collaborated on their fourth full-length release ‘Queensland Ballroom’, released in late 2017, and the ‘Electric Love’ single.

Based in Charlotte, NC, the band is comprised of Jason Herring, Amy Herring, Jeff Chester, Otis Hughes, and Patty McLaughlin. Since forming in 2010, they’ve managed to release 10 EPs and LPs combined.

JC Quinn was an actor from NYC with many films and television credits, including “Barfly”, “the Abyss”, “Visionquest” and countless others. He moved to Charlotte in the late 1990s to be closer to his grandchildren. We met at a downtown watering hole called Cafe 521, owned and operated by his good friend from New York, Peter Herrero. That’s where I met JC, along with many other actors, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Bernadette Peters, etc.. They would always stop at the café when in town to visit their good friend Peter,” says Jason Herring.

“JC and I struck up a nice friendship. He was a fan of ours and would come to shows and stand right up front so we could see him. A very lovely man indeed. Sadly, JC died in Mexico while shooting a film a few years ago. I’ve always wanted to pay tribute to him, and we have finally done so with this song. The lyrics are a blend of what we would do with him now if he were still here, and iconic lines from some of his films.”

‘Zsa Zsa’ was recorded at Catalyst Recording and various local studios over a 2+ year stretch following a number of Southeast U.S. tours in promotion of the band’s ‘Queensland Ballroom’ album. This new record touches of several different styles – everything from deep mellow shoegaze and folky ambient to upbeat danceable trip-hop and electronica.

‘Zsa Zsa’ finds the quintet moving further afield of its earlier psych-folk leaning to land on something more akin to the down-tempo approach of Portishead and Zero 7, mixed with early 4AD action. That later is in no small part due to the return of band collaborator, producer John Fryer (too many A-list credits to list here), and new Mystery Plan friend Ian    Masters, former bassist-vocalist of influential British shoegazers Pale Saints.

Wolfhounds Premieres ‘Can’t See The Light’ Video (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Wolfhounds drop their new video for the track titled ‘Can’t See The Light’. Trippy and psychedelic in all the right places, ‘Can’t See The Light’ gives the guitars a chance to fight each other over a steady/strong bassline and thumpy percussion, while the vocals act as the ringleader in this psycho-circus of music. London-based C86 legends Wolfhounds have announced their new album ‘Electric Music’, set for release on July 3 via A Turntable Friend Records. Ahead of this, they present a lead single ‘Can’t See the Light’, a powerful track that opens fire on side one of the forthcoming record with captivating video by David Janes.

“Musically, ‘Can’t See The Light’ has a discordant guitar line – perhaps carrying echoes of John Barry’s The Persuaders theme – until it reaches a desperate crescendo; this feeling is captured brilliantly by David Janes’ claustrophobic and darkly psychedelic video,” says Wolfhounds’ frontman David Callahan.

A spitball of melancholy fury, this is an explosive tune about how anger turns inward after the low expectations of a country’s myriad self-defined gatekeepers have crippled the ambitions of those who want change for the better. With a bass-heavy rush, ‘Can’t See The Light’ builds desperately to a semi-tonal release of noise, sounding simultaneously claustrophobic and liberating.

“All tunnels eventually emerge into the sun (as David Janes’ accompanying paranoid and sick-a-delic video shows) but while you’re underground it can seem like darkness is perpetual and inevitable,” says Callahan.

Always ahead of the times, The Wolfhounds have never nailed the spirit of now more succinctly and devastatingly than on this new single and other songs on the new album.

Originally formed as teenagers in 1984, The Wolfhounds released four critically acclaimed LPs before initially disbanding in 1990. By that time, they released music on the legendary and influential C86 cassette via NME, recorded three John Peel sessions for BBC Radio One, and toured the UK and Europe extensively as headliners and as support for My Bloody Valentine, The House of Love and The Wedding Present. The band’s acknowledged and audible influence stretches from Nirvana to the Manic Street Preachers, and all the way to Fontaines DC – but musically they remain ahead of all.

The band reformed in 2006 at the request of St Etienne’s Bob Stanley to celebrate 20 years since the release of C86, and inflicted a severe guitar noisefest on an unsuspecting indiepop crowd at London’s ICA. Since 2012, they have been recording and releasing new material, including ‘Middle Aged Freaks’ (2015) and ‘Untied Kingdom or (How to Come to Terms With Your Culture)’ (2017), repeatedly showing that they can still blow any act half their age offstage. In 2018, Wolfhounds released ‘Hands in the Till – The complete John Peel sessions’, a 12-track album released via A Turntable Friend Records.

The Wolfhounds are back and better than ever with their new ‘Electric Music’ LP – probably their greatest album yet.
 The band has become truly (hyper-)active again, performing at several pop fests (including Berlin and New York) and stand-up comedian Stewart Lee’s All Tomorrow’s Parties, as well as regular club dates in the UK and Europe. Stewart Lee also wrote the extensive sleevenotes for the record.

The band continues to be more relevant and adventurous than ever and, despite their indie roots, have more in common with the likes of Richard Dawson and Sleaford Mods than their old jangly peers. Electric Music grabs their home country’s woes by the horns and gives them the kicking they deserve!
