THE WEEK IN #INDIE

An Exclusive Interview With Miss Cantaloupe (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with Miss Cantaloupe front-woman Christina Klaproth, aka Princess. What I love, because I was pleasantly surprised, about this interview is the sheer and vivid imagination behind this band of visual virtuosos is the lush and clear world created around the music of Miss Cantaloupe. It’s, how should I say, Cantaloupian.

And, with that said, you too can get a glimpse of this and the music with this exclusive interview with Christina where she discusses the minds behind the music, the vision, the new and upcoming music, and how it all comes together.

We also get a first look at Miss Cantaloupe’s new video for the track titled ‘Sunshine Daydream’. Filmed before the lockdown, ‘Sunshine Daydream’ shows how things will be again with a bright and beautiful travelogue that fits the gorgeous and wonderfully personal video that captures that easygoing and forward-reaching music that is Miss Cantaloupe with a broad array of musical instruments underlying and surrounding that angelic vocal track that is signature.

About Pls Pls Me

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with the dynamic duo of electro-pop known as Pls Pls Me. I am so glad we caught this interview on video as well because Jimi Fish and Jessie Torrisi (the minds behind the music) is such a good collaboration that it shows on the video. They have bonded creatively in ways I wish more artists would. Think Ying meeting Yang. You will learn that and more in this interview for sure.

We also get to listen to their new single titled ‘Too Late’ (Spotify below) which is the evidence of what I said above. The track is a slow melodic burn through a marvelous hook that melts the current isolation and hits you in all of the right places in such a good mix that it feels like the music surrounds you. This is a representation of what a new decade can bring.

About MOAT

MOAT has just released their new single titled ‘Gone By Noon’. Comprised of Marty Willson-Piper and Niko Röhlcke, MOAT is a lush and brooding preview of things to come with their upcoming album ‘Poison Stream’, to be released in 2021.

Dark in a signature kind of way, ‘Gone By Noon’, for lack of a better analogy, is a song constructed like a film. I can feel the concept from start to finish and, as do all art with it’s own signature, subtly moves me and conveys emotion with the nuance as much as the music.

The background instrumentation hides in the background yet lend just as much to the ear as do the vocals. And, while everything played in the song has its place, there is enough space left over to fill with your experiences in order to make this song a part of you, and to make this part of the soundtrack that is your life. Listen and hear for yourself.

About Mt. Doubt

Mt. Doubt has released their new single titled ‘Headless’, from their new album ‘Doubtlands’. A beautiful collage of soundscapes and vocal harmonies, ‘Headless’ is a solid track that veers in wild directions while standing still. By that, I mean that the track has a wide range of lush sounds while staying true to its form. Somber and succulent in one take, ‘Headless’ gives that certain something found in only the best tracks that are hard to pin into a genre.

Comprised of a glistening steady guitar-driven chord progression, the song comes to an artful climax with a gritty saxophone and concludes with the listener wanting more.

About Tómas Welding

Tómas Welding is set to drop his upcoming single titled ‘Arcade’ from his upcoming album releasing on November 6. Starting off solid and continuing that original hook throughout, Tómas Welding shows himself to be the consummate songwriter and accomplished artist in ‘Arcade’.

Smooth and with an even flow, ‘Arcade’ will definitely add to the already 5 million streams his music as already garnered and further solidify his name into the new music scene.

About Arms Of Kismet

Arms of Kismet have today premiered their new video and single titled ‘Dreamland’. As if written by a dream the track gives that earnest feels from a group of honest songwriters with a solid hook and ‘glide like’ nature within the chorus that gives that feelgood sound that summer really needed at this moment.

The visuals within the video are both nostalgic and artful without distracting from the song. They had me at the intro! Who could not remember Wolfenstein 3D from 1993!!!! The combination of kaleidoscope and vivid artwork really matches the song not only in rhythm but in reason.

About John Dhali

John Dhali releases his new video for the track titled ‘In Time’. an upbeat video in a downtrodden time, John Dhali lightens the mood with a beacon of hope and harmony with his new song ‘In Time’. Visually, what I get at first look is that a mask can’t hide the heart and a pandemic can’t suppress the soul. And that soul sings with the glee of the moment and the movement of the momentum created by the drive of a musician representing this new decade of individual beauty.

About Marsela

Marsela has released the new video for her single titled ‘Who Knows Where The Love Goes?’. With an amazing soulful voice and powerful yet subtle beginning, Marsela gives a performance fit for the times with a heart-on-the-sleeve style that captivates all who listen and mesmerizes all who watch.

‘Who Knows Where The Love Goes?’ shows that healing begins with the self through recognition and reflection in such a lush aural landscape that one no longer feels alone and isolated from those with the same experiences. This song is a testament.

About Outwave

Outwave has released their new video for the track titled ‘Moving Tangle’. The song was written to be played live, as that is no more evident in the video. The lock-down hasn’t slowed Outwave down one bit as they outreach to the masses with a better time to come in the form of a solid rock guitar-driven track with a marvelous hook and rock angst in all of the right places.

An Exclusive Interview with Sa-Roc (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Jammerzine has an exclusive interview with rap pioneer Sa-Roc. This, to me, is one of those interviews that is a privilege to be a part of for the simple fact that talking with Sa-Roc becomes one of those situations where you walk away all the better because you learn something. For one, you learn that becoming famous, much less good doing what you want to do is more than just realizing the dream, its hard work and commitment.

Sa-Roc is the epitome of that and more. She took a vision and learned all of the logistics necessary to achieve and sustain that vision and she did that while finding her own voice. We learn that and more in this interview.

We also learn about her new upcoming album titled ‘The Sharecropper’s Daughter’, which releases on October 2nd. The album is 15 tracks of insight documenting renaissance, revolution, and revelation. We are living in the perfect age for this album.

KnightressM1 Releases ‘Lock and Key’ (The Week in #Indie Segment)

KnightressM1 has just released her new video for the track titled ‘Lock and Key’. the addition as a violin as a frontal instrument is captivating enough. If gives the song a whole new set of tonality and range that would not be there if a guitar or keyboard handled those melodic duties. however, that adds much flavor to an already flavorful track that the video really does a symphonic justice to.

But what KnightressM1 delivers is a complete and full track with a visual aid that adds a new and original cinematic flare that otherwise would not be there had this been another artist.

As of August 17, ‘Lock & Key’ will be available across digital outlets such as Apple Music and streaming platforms such as SpotifyThe full ‘Dreams and Devastation’ LP is slated for release on September 25.

The Mojo Slide Releases ‘Not In My Name’ Single (The Week in #Indie Segment)

The Mojo Slide has released their new single titled ‘Not In My Name’.  Groove infected from the start and hook-laden throughout, The Mojo Slide show that the steady groove is the way to go with their latest single.

Guitar-driven and rhythm steered, ‘Not In My Name’ has that perfect chord construction that steers clear from the inside of the box musically and has a specific rhythm and definition lyrically that adds to the punctuation of the track itself.

Black Bordello Releases Eponymous Album (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Black Bordello have released their eponymous album. A solid fusion of a little of everything from Fusion to vintage show and everything in between but one thing is for sure, this is all Black Bordello. In all of their glory. And this is what I love about #indie music. That unbreaking originality and melding of influences. This is the love of music put to record.

ABOUT BLACK BORDELLO

After a few years of gigging in and around London, Peckham’s Black Bordello is an established live force. Following a succession of well-received singles ( Spectre Man, Backache, Leeches ) The London group has released a full-length debut album that melds Vaudeville, Jazz, and Gothic Rock in one complete and overwhelming maelstrom.

Originally the project of Sienna Bordello, much of the album’s material dates back to Black Bordello’s 2017 inception, although it has now been honed to streamlined perfection. However, as the band’s line up has stabilized, a singular sound has emerged that fuses the band’s seemingly disparate influences.

Sienna’s influences come from across the board from “the loaded rebellion” of PJ Harvey and Poly Styrene to the emotional integrity of Bessie Smith and the post-modern vibe collages of Post Normal. The latter of which she was introduced to by her university lecturer the late, great writer Mark Fisher. “I sheepishly told him I couldn’t make music because i didn’t have any of the right ‘stuff’. He told me that was bollocks and showed me some bands who recorded at home without all the fancy gear and software, Garage Band and Audacity became my playground as I discovered there is no right way”

Of her own musical beginnings, Sienna says ” I got very into pre-war Jazz and started singing standards at the Jamboree in the Cable Street studios, where I later ended up illegally living. I would get up and sit with the band and sing a song or two, normally Billie Holiday or Bessie Smith, as dancers with day jobs partnered up and practiced swing dancing in hoards on the old scratched parquet floors. I had fun but it wasn’t always easy”

After Sienna’s scatting was deemed too experimental for the jazz standards group, she looked for a new musical vehicle. After bonding with keys player Andrew Marriott over similar fish tattoos at a Brockley party, Black Bordello swiftly took shape, with the group taking their name from Sienna’s family restaurant ‘Il Bordello’.

Now roughly 3 years after the band’s first show, a fully realized self-titled album is finally ready for release. From the Dreaming era of Kate Bush’s theatre of ‘Leeches’ to the heady prog swagger of ‘Prufrock’, a wild range of music is on show. ‘Baby’ is a noisy Jazz sprawl and ‘Spectre Man’ is as maudlin a ballad as you’re ever likely to hear. This is a vital debut album by one of the capitals most exciting new bands.

CloudRunners Premiere ‘The Only One’ (The Week in #Indie Segment)

CloudRunners have premiered their new song titled ‘The Only One’ right here on Jammerzine. As a bonus, we also get what is becoming rarer and rarer in the days of the pandemic and that is a video. What I get with that initial listen is a cross between the alternative progressiveness in the underground music scene in that wonderful but all-too-short era in music between 1989 and 1991 when we got absolutely original bands such as Live and School of Fish. This band is of that caliber and level in originality and musical personality. The song itself is a well thought out lesson in songwriting with a solid hook and imaginative vocal-harmony intense chorus.

Let CloudRunners be your next favorite artist.

ABOUT CLOUDRUNNERS

The CloudRunners are a modern alternative rock band formed in Ventura, California in 2018, but band creators and brothers Chris and Nick have been working toward their music goals since long before that. Originally from Iowa City, Iowa, they have been writing, playing, recording, and producing original music since 2006. Unfortunately, most of that time they were half the country away from each other while going through college and taking their first jobs after graduation. They were finally able to join up again when they were both offered mechanical engineering positions for a satellite mechanisms company in southern California. There they met Peter, another mechanical engineer for the company who shared their goal of making a career in music.

The trio has been supported by other musician friends to fill out the band since they started in 2018. In two short years, they have gone from playing local bars on weekends to rocking California’s Ventura County Fair with Collective Soul, opening a show for Royal Bliss, and performing alongside Hinder. Their momentum took a hit when the coronavirus pandemic brought the music industry to a halt in early 2020, but the CloudRunners hardly let that stop them. While unable to play shows, they focused on building their own studio and recording original music.

Plastic Barricades Releases ‘Tunnel (Acoustic Shed Session)’ (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Plastic Barricades release an acoustic version of their song ‘Tunnel’. The song is one of those types of tracks that really shows it’s true colors when stripped bare and revealed and compared to the original (video below). Plastic Barricades is a band that obviously shines live and let’s hope, for all of our sakes, that those live venues open up soon.

ABOUT BARRICADES & ‘TUNNEL’

London alt-rock duo Plastic Barricades is releasing Tunnel, have released their third single from the upcoming LP Self-Theories. The track comes with a trippy music video that continues the tradition of an unaltered DIY approach and was shot using a digital microscope. Sometimes it feels like life is this winding road with plenty of tunnels. You go in, it is dark and uneasy, and pretty soon you start wondering how long this tunnel is.

Visibility is reduced, you cannot increase your speed or turn back. It starts to feel claustrophobic. Your thoughts are amplified, loudly reverberating in your head. All you can do is keep reminding yourself that no tunnel lasts forever and you will make it out of this one, like all the previous ones you’ve been to – and you will see sunlight again!

TUNNEL FACTS:

  • The song was written and recorded in a backyard Shed Studio in North-West London, mixed by Paul Love and mastered by Andy Baldwin at Metropolis Studios.
  • Video for the single, created by PB art-director Elina Pasok and Dan Kert, was made using a microscope with up to 1000 times magnification and no CG.
  • Imagine if you could see your worries and anxieties under a microscope? What would they look like?
  • Single release date – 6th of July 2020
  • Self-Theories LP due in autumn 2020

Romantic and honest, gloomy and curious, melodic and melancholic, Plastic Barricades chronicle life in the troubled yet fascinating XXI century, asking questions and trying to find answers. Inspired and influenced by almighty Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Oasis, Coldplay, Muse, Death Cab for Cutie, Placebo, Snow Patrol, The Shins, Nirvana, and many others, the band loves to experiment with styles, sound, and approach.

Based between London and Paris, Plastic Barricades are Dan Kert on guitars and vocals and Paul Love on drums and production.
