Zenith Volt Premieres New Single ‘Hold On’ (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Zenith Volt has premiered the new single titled ‘Hold On‘ right here on Jammerzine. Starting off as an electronic burst of energy from the first note, this First Listen garners the attention with ecstatic energy and electric harmony in ways that only a true artist can muster. Designed for the dancefloor and mastered for the masses, ‘Hold On’ gives that certain something we all need to erode the isolation and ‘go through the motion’ and lets us ‘hold on to what we got’, which is each other. This is brilliance with bass.

Hold On” sounds like it could be written for these crazy modern times, as an anthem for the 20’s even this early on. What did you set out to write about when you started working on this track?

I actually started writing “Hold On” at the end of 2019 and it eerily fell right in line with my life as 2020 unfolded and society seemed to be tearing into itself. So naturally, it became more of an anthemic message about perseverance and the prodigious pursuit of the greater good. Essentially it asks the question, how do we get there? You have to HOLD ON.

The production is fantastic, a mix of the retro with a large modern sound (reminds me of MGMT’s “Oracular Spectacular”). Did you produce this yourself, who else did you team up on to create “Hold On”?

First off … glad you like it! All of the pre-production of the instrumentals and lyric composition was done solely by myself in my home studio on Maui. And then when I was ready to get final vocal takes I met up with my good friend Eric Scullin in LA and together we dug deeper into the mixing process and unearthed a banger.

Lastly, I wanted to touch on Hawaii as your home base. Each part of the country has certainly always had its own feel but especially nowadays those differences are becoming more distinct. I once heard that the weather is always so nice in Hawaii that people lose their grasp on reality haha. Does your music even fit into the physical world, or is the Zenith Volt universe more transcendent?

To your observation, in my own words, I refer to Hawaii as my home planet. It is a great place that seems to work hand in hand with the ethereal sound and aesthetic that is Zenith Volt. I’m definitely writing what I feel with my full senses when I am home on an island…. wide open spaces / starry nights / long horizons / a readily available grasp of infinity. I feel like music, in general, is pulled from The Great Beyond by artists, and reconstructed into an earthy form, so at its core, it’s dually rooted in transcendence AND reality.

When life and love have the inability to serve as waypoints for one’s own universal existence there is only one thing to do… Hold On. Instability can only exist when harmony feels as if its too far down the road. As long as we hold on we will make it. Don’t ever let go…

Fly the Nest Releases Wild Ride (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Fly the Nest, aka Stephen Cooper, is set to drop his new single titled ‘Wild Ride’. Energetic from the start and passionate throughout, ‘Wild Ride’ is a blossoming track of layered guitars and harmonizing vocals that set the mood and take the stage in ways that harken back to that turn-of-the-century power-pop when rock ruled the world and songwriting mattered.

ABOUT FLY THE NEST

Dublin native Stephen Cooper AKA Fly The Nest started playing music at a young age, performing in various bands. It wasn’t until last year that he started the solo project Fly The Nest, under which he writes and releases his own music.

Stephen also wrote music for sync licensing and says that “Writing for film and TV has opened up another facet of my creativity. It’s helped me find my sound, which I like to call ‘Cinematic Rock’.

The project also encompasses Stephen’s time spent on the live circuit in Scandinavia where he spends a lot of his time, traveling between Ireland and Denmark.

The name Fly the Nest came from traveling and moving on from a previous musical journey to the one he’s currently on.

‘Wild Ride’ is Stephen’s brand new single and has ‘feel good’ anthem written all over it, welcome to ‘Fly The Nest’.

An Interview with Sami Chohfi (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Sami is the type of artist that holds the world in his heart and wears that heart on his sleeve. To listen, in this interview, how and why his songs came to be is not only an inspiration for the musician but a lesson in humanity. I wish more people were like Sami. The world would be a much kinder place. and, in this interview, we get a history and reasoning behind his new single and video titled ‘This Majesty’ (video below) as well as his upcoming album titled ‘Extraordinary World’.

The video and track titled ‘This Majesty’ we get but a glimpse of Sami’s style and soul. As a musician, a person, and a world traveler. Filmed on location in India (details below) ‘This Majesty’ shows the majestic side of merging song, solitude, and serenity in ways that only a person listening with an open mind can truly understand. Open that mind and heart and inherit the message that we are all individuals that form a collective known as the world.

The video and single ‘This Majesty’ is out as of today (August 7, 2020). The full album ‘Extraordinary World’ releases on September 1, 2020, via all digital platforms.

ABOUT ‘THIS MAJESTY’

This Majesty was written in Amboseli National Park, Kenya shortly after the passing of Sami’s older brother Joshua. The production team felt the video for this song needed to be filmed in the most stunning and grandiose of locations of India, including Nahargarh Fort, Hawa Mahal, and the Taj Mahal.

Sami’s Personal Notes about the song: I remember my time in Kenya so very vividly, waking up in the morning to the most beautiful sunrises and gazing off into the majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro. When we lose the ones we love we feel an emptiness. I am reminded constantly that those who have gone from our lives are always with us. In our triumphs and failures, in our happiness and grief and in all the magical moments we continue to experience.

ABOUT SAMI CHOHFI

While Sami Chohfi is a Brazillian-American singer/songwriter based in Seattle, he is undeniably a modern citizen of the world. His upcoming solo debut, Extraordinary World, was written across six countries over the last two years. From his journeys across Cambodia, France, India, Kenya, and The Philippines as brand ambassador for the clothing line Be Good to People® to touring with his band Blue Helix across his family’s native country of Brazil, Chohfi’s songwriting takes a rock upbringing and spins it with musical influences from around the world.

His upcoming single, “This Majesty” is arguably one of the album’s most personal examples of how travel seeped into his songwriting, written in Kenya’s Amboseli Park in the wake of his older brother’s passing.

“He loved climbing the highest mountains and I was constantly reminded of him as I gazed upon Mt. Kilimanjaro,” Chohfi adds. “In my experience from the many cultures I have been exposed to over the last two years, most believe that when we lose someone we love, we never truly lose them. I don’t think I will ever feel like those I loved and lost are gone from this place… we carry them with us.”

With a video shot at world-renowned sites like the Taj Mahal and breathtaking footage of India in a pre-corona world, Extraordinary World serves as a timely reminder that, in Chohfi’s words, “all people just want to fit in, beloved, and be understood.”

An Exclusive Interview with Ashton Nyte (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Ashton Nyte has recently released his album and companion book titled ‘Waiting For A Voice’. This is a wonderful interview, to say the least. More of a conversation, actually. What we get is that voice we’ve all been waiting for. And that voice is the type of voice we need in this day and age. I’m not talking phonetically. I mean spiritually. Musically.

Both the album and book are from the mind of someone who observes and interprets. The songs are the music that sews the heart to the sleeve and the book is a brilliant and compassionate collage of lyrics, poetry, and autobiographical segments. And the result is a medium of solitary substance that, I hope, the listener inherits as much as they ingest.

And what we get today is that deep conversation with Ashton, where we talk about the album and book ‘Waiting For A Voice’ and get in-depth about both an introverted human being giving the world a voice we’ve been needing but also that inspiration that we can use to move forward.

ASHTON NYTE’S ‘WAITING FOR A VOICE’

Dubbed the “lovechild of Johnny Cash and Nick Cave” by NPR, the new work sees Nyte blending poetry with haunting acoustic minimalism, animated by his rich, diverse baritone voice. Waiting For A Voice, Nyte’s 7th solo album was largely written and recorded after his 36 date European tour with Wayne Hussey (The Mission) concluded in October last year and features his most personal songwriting to date.

The album contains 11 original songs, written, performed, and produced by Nyte, along with an intimate rendition of David Bowie’s “Heroes,” dedicated to Nyte’s father, who passed earlier this year. The accompanying 134pg book expands on themes explored on the album, and is available in hardcover and paperback, along with vinyl, CD and digital versions of the album.

Now based in the USA, Ashton Nyte is a South African born composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and writer. He has released 7 solo albums, in addition to 9 albums as The Awakening, one of South Africa’s most prominent alternative rock bands. He has also contributed lyrics and vocals to several projects – most recently Beauty In Chaos, which features members of The Cure and Cheap Trick among others.

Ashton has written and performed in theatrical productions and organized philanthropic events including his Rock Against Rape concert series, and presenting a lecture series at US universities focusing on tolerance and acceptance. He is a prolific songwriter, with a released catalog of over 250 songs, including an Afrikaans-language album, “Moederland” (2014) which was named one of the top 10 albums of the year by Netwerk24 in South Africa.

Ashton has toured extensively and headlined festivals in the US, Europe, and South Africa, including Ramfest and the Oppikoppi Festival to over 30 000 people.

Last year also saw Ashton working on the score of “Don’t Let Go,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2019. He is currently working on a number of album re-issue projects, along with on-line performances, and will tour the new book and album when it is safe to do so.

2019 saw Ashton working on the score of the movie “Don’t Let Go” with composer Ethan Gold. The movie stars David Oyelowo (Selma), Storm Reid (A Wrinkle In Time) and Mykelti Williamson (Forrest Gump) and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2019. Ashton also contributed to the second and third Beauty Chaos releases and completed a 36 date European Tour with British indie artist Wayne Hussey (The Mission) in September / October 2019. As you know, normally we interview musicians, but today, we are branching out and have reached out to an internet celebrity in the form of TikTok sensation Nicole Ciravolo. Having already gotten major press from the likes of Buzzfeed (article HERE), Nicole has not only began captivating audiences on the TikTok platform but is someone who is seasoning her resume and honing her craft. Having already gained experience via Second City, Nicole is expanding her experience via the various outlets out there and gaining an audience with her personality, style, and skillsets after having literally conquered TikTok with millions of views and likes while also rapidly approaching a million followers.

Mantis and the Prayer drop the new EP/Double AA Single titled ‘Murder Ballad and the Blue’. The first track, titled ‘I Know you’, is a sonically diverse yet subtle track with a somber vocal track coupled with layered guitar and an almost light orchestral with cinematic flare. Almost done in a way as to enhance the meaning of the lyrics, ‘I Know You’ is a melancholic soliloquy for the isolated.

‘Go Too Far’, while appearing more upbeat, is just as melancholic in emotion but from a different creative angle. With more of an upbeat demeanor, ‘Go Too Far’ achieves originality with subdued sound effects and an original chord progression that chugs away with the beat.

Mile Me Deaf Releases ‘ECCO’ Album (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Mile Me Deaf has released their new album titled ‘Ecco’ via Siluh Records. Featuring a much more synthesized and refined sound, Wolfgang Möstl, the mind behind the music, give that signature sound a kick with a solid set of hooks within the electronic realm and sends out a solid set of tracks each with their own purpose with the love of an artist and the care of a producer.

ABOUT MILE ME DEAF

Following the release of Mile Me Deaf’s last full-length LP – Alien Age – the long-since fruitful project of Austrian visionary multi-instrumentalist Wolfgang Möstl seemed to have run its course, coming to a head with a vibrant vision of a colorful Pop dystopia. Having started out in the early-00s with his noise-rock outfit Killed By 9V Batteries, Möstl has become one of the keys – and most prolific – cogs in Vienna’s busy viral underground scene, brimming with DIY groups and exploratory solo projects. Transcending the confines of the scene too, Möstl has also toured the US twice with both Mile Me Deaf and anarchic fuzzy Pop group Sex Jams, a song by the former also featuring on US drama series This Is Us.

So – where to go from there? As Möstl puts it: “It’s hard to write songs about a world you basically destroyed.” The intervening years saw Möstl meet increasing demands for his production chops (Dives, Voodoo Jürgens), work with his Stoner Rock outfit Melt Downer, Vaporwave project Voyage Futur, plus singer-songwriter Clara Luzia – and most importantly of all, become a father.

Inescapably drawn back to Mile Me Deaf though, ‘Ecco’ manages to somehow find Möstl at the peak of his Pop prowess. The revived bionic project’s soundscapes are now popular synths, samplers, and a futurist pulse rather than guitars, underlining Ecco’s central theme of repetition and rebirth. Fuelled by an impulsive stream-of-consciousness writing process, Möstl finds himself guided down a dark – and basic – path towards a glittering album of potent post-psychedelic, post-vaporwave, post-human Pop about birth and death.

‘Ecco’ explores how everything, ultimately, repeats itself. Built from loops and pulsing electronics as much as human fingers on keys and some of Möstl’s most captivating melodies, songs like ‘Stop And Rewind’, ‘Phase’, or ‘Loop’ have a clear message: “All is echoing infinitely.” As Möstl himself is well aware, the next stage of Mile Me Deaf is impossible to resist. ‘Ecco’ finds bliss in repetition, and assembles utterly intoxicating Pop grooves out the other side of his project’s first death.

Dives Premieres ‘100 Times’ Single (The Week in #Indie Segment)

DIVES released their new single titled ‘100 Times’ on June 17, 2020. We get a listen of the suave new track in all of its glory and shimmering originality. The track is a showcase of sorts and a perfect introduction track to what DIVES’ sound is and creativity can bring. The song is a strong blend of solid chord progressions and harmonies that soar and dive in unison causing that inevitable hit of the repeat button.

ABOUT DIVES

Teenage angst has paid off well, DIVES are now ready to have it all. DIVES know their capabilities, their strengths, and the songs they want to write. On their first album, titled ‘Teenage Years Are Over’, they now become an essential integrant within Europe’s big indie-bands.

With their first EP, DIVES got off to a dream start: In Dresden, they played in front of 12,000 people, headlined the Viennese Popfest, toured with Courtney Barnett, accompanied the Vengaboys at the Viennese Ballhausplatz and played various shows as support to established artists (Franz Ferdinand, Bilderbuch). In doing so, they do not need permission or well-intentioned advice.

DIVES accompany Surf-Garage-Pop with emancipated lyrics. They don’t shy away from speaking their mind. There’s no crying over missed chances, no pointless vanity, and no fake pretending for the sake of being part of something. This mindset also shows in their thoroughly produced music videos, most recently for the song Chico for which they teamed up with director Kevin Pham. It accentuates the trio’s refined aesthetics while they are riding a speedboat over the Vienna’s Danube River. On their first, full-length record, DIVES wave good-bye to the initial doubts – „Are we good enough? Where do we want to see ourselves? What will happen if our youthful easiness is gone?“. They found their answers: On the stage, in their songs and finally in themselves as friends and companions.

This is their new single ‘100 Times’.

Bailey Coats Releases ‘No Other Way’ Single (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Bailey Coats officially releases her new single titled ‘No Other Way’ as of today (June 19, 2020). Beginning as a vocal exercise, Baily starts the song off with a subtle bang of reminiscing of life and love with that message of no other way, sent to us just in time as a pick me up and mental reassurance that is well needed and deserved with the state of things being the way they are.

Featuring a unique duet between the percussive yet melodic vocals versus the staccato beat and lush piano-driven music, ‘No Way Out’ showcases a solid artist at the introduction of her career.

Ask Carol Release ‘Run With You’ Video (The Week in #Indie Segment)

Ask Carol have released their new video for the track titled ‘Run With You’. And, with this being their first actual music video, there is no better way to make their visual debut than with the eye candy set forth with ‘Run With You’. Constructed not only as a visual accompaniment to the song but as an artistic statement in of itself, the video gives visual punctuation to the percussiveness of the song while highlighting the hook and becoming almost a canvas for the song to paint on instead of the music becomes a soundtrack. This is essential because, as someone who reviews music every day, it is exactly what a music video should be; an introduction to the music.

ABOUT ASK CAROL

“Run With You” is Ask Carol’s first-ever real music video, made by the band themselves, under the corona-lockdown. Filmed around Carol’s home in the Norwegian woods, this short story portraits two girls, two sisters, desperate to get away. One of the sisters is in a bad, abusive relationship, reluctant to get away, while her sister tries to convince her otherwise. Eventually, she’s had enough, and the abused sister takes matters into her own hands. They escape together as the story unfolds in a dark, Nordic environment that sets the mood for this dramatic story. Given the special circumstance of the corona-lockdown and that Carol, Ask (Ask is a real Norwegian name) and Carol’s sister was quarantined together, the three is the only people involved in the music video. Carol and Ask filmed, produced, directed, acted in, and edited the music video, and Carol´s sister played the sister in the movie. A real Corona-lockdown DIY project.

“Run With You” is Ask Carol’s first single of 2020, a catchy disco-punk alt-pop tune with a retro vibe. Intimate vocals and grungy guitars setting the mood, with a dreamy background and pulsating beat.

The first of several releases planned for this Summer and Fall, leading up to debut album early 2021. The song was written long before these challenging corona times, but lately, the song has come to mean something more to us. We feel it represents a longing for just going away, to get away from it all, a feeling that has grown more intense as we all have to stay home for such a long time…
