‘Unveiled’ delves into the writing and recording process of the Beauty In Chaos album ‘Behind The Veil’. The documentary explores the decision to use an all female vocal lineup and the creative process involved with each of the artists. We also get first hand accounts from Grammy nominated producer Michael Rozon and the artists involved in the remixes.
‘Unveiled’ features insight and commentary from singers/songwriters Elena Alice Fossi (Kirlian Camera), Whitney Tai, Tish Ciravolo, Pinky Turzo (Silver Ghost Shimmer), Betsy Martin (Caterwaul, Purr Machine), and Cinthya Hussey, with remixes by Bentley Jones, Julian Shah-Tayler, Tim Palmer, Tommy Hatz, Michael Rozon, as well as those around and involved by the project.
‘Unveiled’ offers an intimate look at how Beauty In Chaos was able to create a cohesive and diverse album while also staying true to their mission statement. The album, ‘Behind The Veil’, features songs that are relevant, musically, socially, and spiritually in today’s world.
This new documentary will appeal to both musicians and music fans alike as well as open the eyes and ears of those looking for a more expansive and varied musical project.

Leeds-based trailblazers, I LIKE TRAINS present ‘The Truth’, an eye-opening lead track that forebodes their potent, hard-hitting new album ‘KOMPROMAT’, written as an instinctive gut reaction to a world that has changed beyond all recognition. This is a record that digs beneath populism’s rise, from the divide and conquers tactics that caused Brexit in the UK, to Trump’s ascent in America and the subsequent reign of lies and misinformation, to discover the grubby hands that have engineered it all.
The British quintet will release their fourth studio album via Schubert Music’s newly founded Atlantic Curve label in late summer. This is the band’s first record since 2012’s ‘The Shallows’, which focused on how the internet and smart technology is re-wiring the human mind and affecting our concentration spans. Now, with ‘KOMPROMAT’, it’s clear that this same technology, in the wrong hands, has taken an even more sinister turn. The game has changed – and I LIKE TRAINS have changed with it.
The accompanying deep-fake karaoke video was directed by the previous co-conspirator Michael Connolly, a Leeds born artist and designer. “The track is relentless and I wanted the film to feel the same. Claustrophobia and confusion were my watchwords. I combined deep-fakes, distorted visuals, and digital cut-up techniques to create an intense level of disorientation. It sums up the last four years in geopolitics for me,” says Connolly.
‘The Truth’ was the last track to come together during the group’s recording sessions – a summation of the way in which facts are bent and, in many cases, utterly dismantled. Over a burring build of disco-inflected post-punk that recalls LCD Soundsystem and early DFA Records, “The truth is no longer concerned with the facts”.
“I’d been writing this list on my phone for a couple of months, adding a couple of lines
to it every so often. I’d read a news article or a tweet and I’d make reference to it. I decided to dig out this list in the last couple of days in the studio [for this track]. It’s pretty much the order I wrote it in – it came together on the fifth take and it was a pretty cathartic process,” says the group’s vocalist and lyricist David Martin.Formed in 2004, I LIKE TRAINS is made up of David Martin (vocals/guitar), Alistair Bowis (bass), Guy Bannister (guitar/synths), Simon Fogal (drums) and Ian Jarrold (guitar). They have never shied away from confronting the possibility of humanity’s collapse. Earlier records, like the towering Godspeed-influenced ‘Progress Reform’ (2006) and ‘Elegies to Lessons Learnt’ (2007) took tales of tragic characters and events from history and applied them to the modern-day, while ‘He Who Saw The Deep’ (2010) looked uneasily ahead to the climate change battle we are on the verge of losing.
While ‘KOMPROMAT’ sounds like none of those records, it contains DNA from all of them. I LIKE TRAINS has essentially gone back to go forwards in some ways, returning to some of the primary influences that inspired the band’s formation: Joy Division, The Birthday Party, Gang of Four, Television and The Velvet Underground.
“An I LIKE TRAINS record doesn’t really start to take shape until there’s a theme. That point came following Edward Snowden’s NSA leaks in 2013,” says David Martin.
“We didn’t set out to write a record about current affairs, but the path we set out on converged drastically with that daily discourse. The album inadvertently became about populist politics across the world. Brexit, Trump, Cambridge Analytics and covert Russian influence ended up at the centre of it all”.
At the time, Martin started writing about low-key, insidious intrusions on our privacy. As global events unfolded, however, so did the importance of those themes: the perception of what is true and what isn’t truly being challenged on a daily basis and how that confusion could be used to manipulate populations into thinking and voting in certain ways.
Several years ago, British filmmakers Ben Lankester and Matt Hopkins released the feature documentary ‘A Divorce Before Marriage’, which follows the band members over three years, capturing their struggles first-hand. Then, as now, one thing is for sure – while I LIKE TRAINS often look back and also to the future, ‘The Truth’ speaks very much of the here and now.

In this interview we talk with Sahaj about the new tour and their latest album, ‘Intercorrupted’, Ra’s musical history and where Ra is headed musically.
Ra is a band that, in my opinion, came out at the right time. I remember the late ’90s. I also remember, it was getting a bit boring in regards to music. Ra was my ‘Holy Sh*t!’ moment. That glorious mix of middle eastern and modern western that is ‘Do You Call My Name‘ made me play the guitar in front of my stereo again. Their genre-redefining at the turn of the century turned the century into a place that could survive creatively. ‘Intercorrupted’ is a continuation of such and sees the band take a more accessible and melodic approach. Seether has released their new video for the track titled ‘Wasteland’, from their EP ‘Wasteland – The Purgatory EP ‘ & ‘Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum’.
Visually desolate and sonically cinematic and droning, Seether again shows their longevity with that signature sound that literally spans decades. The drone that I love is that unique chord progression fitting just under that weary vocal set that gives a feeling. That feeling can be unique to each of us but, to me, its a subtle mix of dread and longing. That part of me I keep to myself. I don’t know if that is the effect that Seether wants but its what I get. And that’s enough to keep me interested.
The video features snake wrangler and conservationist Danielle Wall, along with The National frontman Matt Berninger’s brother Tom Berninger.
Shot amongst ruins of desert homes near Joshua Tree, lead singer Shaun Morgan explains: “We were trying to figure out how to make some kind of statement about the evils of social media and it evolved from one idea to the video it is now. After spending such a long period of time without any kind of personal contact with the other band members, the live performance element was especially important to us – it was good for us mentally and emotionally, but it was also important to visually show that we’ve come out the other side after such a difficult time.”
Seether is set to release their new compilation titled ‘Vicennial – 2 Decades of Seether’ on October 15th via Craft Recordings.

Glenn Hodge Banned will release his new album titled ‘The Long Run’ this Friday (August 20th). At that first listen, ‘Long Run’ gives the impression of an alt-folk with a tinge of soul, but when you go deeper, you find that Glenn may be one of the last troubadours. He has a keen sense of the music of the past, but he makes that, and more, his own. I would maybe compare him to early Bob Dylan. Not in style but in career milestones. He is at the beginning of his own long run. We get a span of emotions and stories that he lived through each track while being told through the mind and heart of a musical poet.

Our ‘staring into the abyss and we find ourselves’ realization. Jasmine personifies that with her beautiful voice and steadfastly stoic track. Bravo.

An Exclusive Interview with Marty Willson-Piper (The Week in #Indie Segment)
Noctorum has released their fourth album ‘The Afterlife’ – the duo’s first long-play in seven years, which will be released exclusively on CD and gatefold vinyl to PledgeMusic contributors in November 2018. The general release of this album happened in February 2019 via Schoolkids Records.
Noctorum is guitarist/singer-songwriter Marty Willson-Piper and producer Dare Mason. The duo presents their new single ‘Piccadilly Circus in the Rain’, following up the first single ‘A Girl With No Love’.
Named for the village Noctorum, located near to their childhood homes on The Wirral (near Liverpool), Dare and Marty liked its association with night and its Latin derivation. This collaboration has an eclectic focus, making the quiet-loud and vice-versa, singing words that might be spoken and playing indoor instruments that should be heard outside. It has to be imagined to exist.
“Perhaps city-living is by definition a difficult slog – high rents, a constant pressure to earn, an uphill battle that traps you in a vicious circle that has you so focussed on the job of survival that your aspirations, your dreams, are swept aside, pushed out of reach as all your waking hours are spent treading water, your imagination drowning, your ideas lost in the rush hour,” says Marty Willson-Piper.
“Piccadilly Circus In The Rain addresses the struggle and questions the romantic notion of London as a cultural melting pot – music, galleries, nightlife, history, energy, red double-decker buses, unarmed friendly Bobbies, the cover of Abbey Road and the Queen. Singling out this city is purely coincidental but in truth, for most people with artistic tendencies “London brings you to your knees”.
Having formed in 2002, Noctorum released their debut album ‘Sparks Lane’ on Heyday Records in 2003. In 2006, they followed up with the album ‘Offer The Light’ on that same label, later re-releasing it as a digipak in 2010 via Second Motion Records. Heyday released their third album ‘Honey Mink Forever’ in 2011.
Marty Willson-Piper has been writing and performing internationally for over 35 years. He is best known as a long-time member of Australian psychedelic rock band The Church, who he was with from its inception through to 2013. He joined All About Eve in the ’90s, releasing two studio albums and several live albums with them. He is also lead singer and lyricist with Swedish band MOAT and a touring member of Swedish Prog legends Anekdoten. Since the mid-1980s, Willson-Piper has maintained a steady solo output, releasing six solo studio albums and three live solo albums to date. He has also co-written music with many artists, including Grace Slick, Aimee Mann, Susannah Hoffs, and Linda Perry.
As a house engineer at London’s world-famous Townhouse Studios, Dare Mason has worked with the likes of Prince, Paul McCartney, Boy George, Tina Turner, Ravi Shankar, and Soul II Soul, among others. After becoming a freelance producer/engineer in 1991, he produced albums for The Grid, The Church, Placebo and AC Acoustics, working in London, New York, Sydney, and Stockholm. He finally moved to Cornwall, where he set up the VIP Lounge studio in 2001. Nowadays, Dare is mainly known as a mixing engineer, having mixed recordings by Brix Smith (ex-The Fall), Cinerama and Tommy Tokyo. Dare is also a composer, songwriter, and accomplished guitarist, singer, and dabbler in keyboards, usually contributing musically to the artists he produces.
